BETWEEN WALLS IN FAVELAS : Police violence in Rio de Janeiro
This 2005 documentary, A German-Brasilian co-production of the video collectives AK KRAAK (Berlin), aTraVer adn Tv Comunitaria (Rio de Janeiro) gives a voice to the inhabitants of the favelas of Rio. They talk about their lives: limited possibilities;being marginalised;and above all- the police brutality. 1194 people were killed in 2003 by the police of Rio de Janeiro. The victims were mainly young people -black and mulattos, from the poor areas. The police of Brasil are notorious for the extreme violence in trying to keep order for the state.
This 60-minute documentary is in Portuguese with English subtitles. After the film showing there will be a brief presentation about the group distributing the film in Rio: "Deixe-me identificar", comprised mostly of mothers of murdered sons and daughters, by a person that went to their workshop presented at the world social forum in brasil this year. A summary of the group's recent demands and actions in addition to recent news concerning police violence in Brasil, especially Rio de Janeiro, will be given. There will be time for discussion after the film.
Donations for the group, Deixe-me identificar, will be graciously accepted during this event.

+++ Use our space for radical stuff
One of the most important aspects of the Lucy Parsons Center is providing a community meeting place for radical activities. If you want to host an event, please send an email to Rebecca at rebeccabatchelder (at) yahoo.com. Make sure to give enough notice so that we can approve the event at our bimonthly meetings.
If you have a group that needs a space to have regular meetings, just come to the bookstore and fill out a space request form. Again, make sure to allow time for approval by the collective.
+++ Donate MONEY!
We need support to help ensure the Lucy Parsons Center continues to grow and be an important resource for the community. Donations can be made in the form of cash, check or credit cards. Please call the store for more info. If you don't have a lot, don't worry, even donating the change of your purchase can make a difference.
