Somerville 5 defense:
'Drop racist frame-up charges!'

The Committee to Defend the Somerville High School 5 Against Police Brutality is calling on everyone to put pressure on Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley to drop the racist frame-up charges immediately.

The SHS 5 are Calvin Belfon Jr., Cassius Belfon, Earl Guerra, Isaiah Anderson and Marquis Anderson.

On April 20, these five young Black men were the victims of racial profiling and a brutal, unprovoked attack by Medford, Mass., police. Police beat, clubbed, maced and arrested them.

A massive police cover-up ensued, with the police spreading outrageous lies about what happened that night. They charged the five with assault with a deadly weapon, assault and battery, and disorderly conduct.

The police, with the backing of Coakley, are now trying to force the cases of Calvin Belfon and Isaiah Anderson to Superior Court. Belfon and Anderson are both 17 and are being tried as adults. They face the most severe charges of the five youths.

On May 24, in a strong show of support, family, friends and representatives of the Nation of Islam, Women’s Fightback Network and International Action Center packed the courtroom in Somerville District Court.

"These young men are good students and fine athletes. They have no prior records. This is nothing but an orchestrated cover-up by the police and the D.A. and the media to take the focus off of who the real criminals are here," said Robert Trayhnam of the Committee to Defend the SHS 5.

"It is the Medford police who should be put on trial for racial profiling and police brutality! We must keep the pressure on and make our voices heard," Trayhnam concluded.

Readers are urged to contact Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley, 40 Thorndike St., Cambridge, MA 02141, phone (617) 679-6500, fax (617) 225-0871, and make the following demands: no indictment; drop the racist-frame-up charges against all five youths immediately; independent community investigation into Medford Police; stop racial profiling and police brutality.

Re: Somerville 5 defense: Drop the racist frame-up charges!

Just saw in the corporate media (Boston Globe, June 5) that a number of groups, including the NAACP and the Greater Love Tabernacle Church in Dorchester, are also speaking out on this case. Does Workers World plan to work with them at all? Why are they not mentioned above? I did see that the NOI was, but the International Action Center and theWomen's Fightback Network are both Workers World groups.

Your missing the larger picture here "Just read". Sure, if this call for action was born out of genuine concern and outrage then what you suggest would make sense, but in reality such suggestions run counter to the main goal behind this posting: Stalinist self-aggrandizement.

Hmm.. It still seems to me that these youth DO need all our support.
True true "Bobby Sands", like many others I remain frustrated by attempts by some groups to take over protests, chant louder than the people who organised said protests, show up in costume chanting "Death... Power...", etc,

Some of these folks are well meaning under it all,
perhaps they do believe idealistically in the overthrow of the state NOT simply ending up with another overclass in a few years after "the revolution"... (revolution could be a wheel... dont wheels ALWAYS return to the place they first rotated from, and isnt that strange. There's no Boss like the New Boss, sigh!)

Some WW folks are youth who really do believe that "from each .. to each.." redistribution of resources is way cool - perhaps some even dumpster<?>

Some seem to be trying to reach out to folks of all colors, preferences and socioeconomic backgrounds... thus the use of this issue...

But somehow since I was a kid these groups dont seem to change much - 0h, and cops _are_ still likely to bust yer head and kick yer ass, then say you were resisting arrest & being "disorderly".

anyway,
perhaps we need to help these youth out?!

So, y'all do the research, see if you feel like calling the DA for Middlesex County - not because someones group affiliation attracts or offends you, but because you feel like trying to help some young Black brothers get out of a bad rap.

Peace.
Haters will reap what they sow

I agree with Amatul that we should definitely support these folks. And as John points out, we don't need to do so through Workers World (and these young men aren't WW members). As I mentioned, the NAACP and others have been working on it, and individuals can call the DA.
