Spread story: Chris Hedges "Gaza Diary"
01 Nov 2001
"I have seen children shot in El Salvador,
Algeria, Guatemala, Sarajevo, but I have never
before watched soldiers entice children like
mice into a trap and murder them for sport."
- "Daza Diary" - Chris Hedges
Those who regularly listen to National Public Radio's
Fresh Air talk show may have caught the October 30th
interview with Chris Hedges, former New York Times
Balkans Bureau Chief and Middle East Bureau Chief,
who published a piece in the October issue of Harper’s
Magazine called "A Gaza Diary."

Those who missed it, here is the link:

If you want to order a copy of the transcript, here is
the page:

The interview was a powerful antidote to the usual
white-washing of Israel by the media, and the piece that
appeared in Harper's is quite an eye opener
-- even for a relatively jaded person such as myself.
Here is one gripping quote:

"I have seen children shot in El Salvador,
Algeria, Guatemala, Sarajevo, but I have never
before watched soldiers entice children like
mice into a trap and murder them for sport."

Mr. Hedges repeated this observation during his interview,
expressing disgust with the practices of the Israeli
military and strong compassion for Palestinian
suffering; he also bitterly dismissed the racist canard that
Palestinians don't care for their children.

The interview and the article are important items that
we need to promote as much as possible here in the US.
Such strong testimonials that reveal and condemn in no
apologetic terms the nasty and aggressive character of
the Israeli occupation must, especially coming from a
NYTimes' Mideast Bureau Chief, be made noise
over, disseminated, archived and used over and over
gain to erode the status quo view of the Israeli
occupation as an act of self-defense. Because unless
and until we erode that view of little, scruffy Israel
only engaged in valiantly battling to defend itself,
we will get nowhere. The killing of children for
sport, the deliberate provocations to keep the unrest
burning, and the denunciations of a NYTimes journalist
of such practices, are a powerful first step towards undermining that absurd, but still prevailing, perception.

We are in the process of getting the article and the
interview typed up – Harper's has no handy on-line
version -- and we will share the relevant parts as
we make progress. But if you can pick up a copy
of the magazine, please do. If you want to order a
copy of the October issue, please do via:

Make sure you share your thoughts with both NPR and
Harper's:

Act NOW and help change how the Israeli occupation is
perceived here in the US.
