Guests of the New York Public Library Annual Corporate Dinner were greeted by retirement security activists on June 13 with a giant pill saying, "Privatization: Pfizer's Poison Pill for Social Security."

Dinner guests were given special blue Pfizer cookies with a leaflet urging them to contact Pfizer CEO Hank McKinnell (one of the library's most prominent sponsors), asking him to make good on his pledge to drop out of groups supporting Social Security privatization.

McKinnell -- when pressed by shareholder activists at Pfizer's annual meeting last April -- promised, "If we are supporting any organization whose sole or major objective is the privatization of Social Security, we will stop supporting that organization."

However, Pfizer has continued to maintain its membership in various organizations that advocate carving out personal retirement accounts from Social Security's guaranteed benefits, including the Alliance for Worker Retirement Security, the leading business-backed group lobbying to privatize Social Security. Pfizer has also funded or been active in other groups that support private accounts, including the Cato Institute, the American Legislative Exchange Council, USA Next and Americans for Tax Reform. McKinnell is also chairman of the Business Roundtable, which has pledged to "spend what it takes" to promote privatization of Social Security.

Please send Hank McKinnell a message urging Pfizer to withdraw from the Alliance for Worker Retirement Security and asking him to disavow the Business Roundtable's support for privatized Social Security accounts. E-mail McKinnell through Pfizer's "corporate citizenship" hotline at ccfeedback (at) and "cc" a copy of your e-mail to invest (at)

Photos of the event are posted online.
