World Economic Forum to Meet in New York, NYT Says
By Malcolm Shearmur

New York, Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) -- The World Economic Forum will hold its next annual meeting, the biggest gathering of political and business leaders, in New York instead of the Swiss ski resort of Davos, the New York Times reported.

It would be the first time in 32 years that the forum
wouldn't be held in Davos. The meeting will be held Jan. 31 to Feb. 5 at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan, the paper said.

Swiss authorities balked at rising security costs after the U.S. terrorist attacks. Switzerland paid 8.7 million Swiss francs ($5.3 million) for security at the meeting earlier this year, which had 1,000 guests. In 1999, security cost 270,000 francs.

``You would have to deploy enough forces for a worst-case scenario,'' said Daniel Riest, a spokesman for the Swiss Army, in an interview.

The World Economic Forum and the Swiss government will
announce the location tomorrow morning at a news conference in the Swiss capital of Bern, the government said yesterday.

There will also be a briefing at the Waldorf, which will be attended by New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, New York Governor George Pataki and Klaus Schwab, the president and founder of the World Economic Forum, the Times reported.

The move to New York also reflects concerns by the Geneva- based WEF that few North Americans would have attended a meeting in Switzerland, Swiss business daily L'Agefi reported today.

Microsoft Corp.'s Chairman Bill Gates and financier George Soros were among the guests from the U.S. at this year's event.
