The Cuban National Ballet Goes to Great Britain
19 Jul 2005
The Cuban National Ballet starts tour in England and other cities of Great Britain.
Havana, Jul 18 (Prensa Latina) After a 10-year absence, the Cuban National Ballet (BNC) will return to Great Britain with one of its most famous pieces, “Giselle”, interpreted by Alicia Alonso, who was one of its greatest performers.
The performance will take place on August 16 at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London.
Alicia Alonso rescued the essence of the choreography by Coralli-Perrot and gave it a breath of modernity, to enrich the piece.
British critic Arnold Haskell stated in 1967 in a letter to Alicia Alonso: “You have the best stage production of “Giselle” I have ever seen in my career.”
BNC is working hard under the guidance of prima ballerina Josefina Mendez, and now young dancers will take up the challenge, such as Viengsay Valdés and Joel Carreño.
Alicia Alonso’s interpretation of “Giselle” has been performed in the best places, and is considered one of the best versions in the world. The history of BNC is linked to “Giselle”, and the institution has won many awards with this piece.
Besides this classic, BNC will present a show called “Magic of Ballet”, with fragments of the great world classics.
