Nursing home workers’ union to picket DNC breakfast
14 Nov 2001
SEIU Local 285 and several other labor and community groups will picket a Democratic National Committee (DNC) breakfast hosted by millionaire fundraisers Gerry and Elaine Schuster, the owners of the Wingate at Wilbraham nursing home.
BOSTON – SEIU and the Massachusetts AFL-CIO has called for a boycott of all political fundraisers hosted or sponsored by the Schusters because of charges that their Wingate nursing home has violated public health, labor, safety, and fair housing laws. The DNC breakfast is on Tuesday, November 20 at Boston’s Park Plaza Hotel.

“The Democratic Party should stand for more than just who makes the largest campaign contributions,” said Robert Haynes, president of the Mass AFL-CIO.

The Massachusetts State Democratic Party and forty state legislators have gone on record condemning the Schusters’ waste of scarce health care resources on union busting.

“While the Schusters give away millions, they shortchange their tenants, elderly residents and employees by skimping on staffing and maintenance,” said Celia Wcislo, president of SEIU Local 285. “Caregivers, residents, community leaders and elected officials have taken a stand demanding that the Schusters improve the quality of care and stop the campaign against employees at their nursing home. Why won’t the Democratic National Committee reject the Schusters’ money?”

The protest and picket line is sponsored by SEIU Local 285, the Mass AFL-CIO, the Greater Boston Labor Council, and Mass Jobs with Justice.

Copies of a flyer announcing the picket line and documents showing charges by the Mass. Department of Public Health, OSHA and the NLRB are available from SEIU Local 285.
