Activist Jon Leavitt Shows His True Colors
23 Sep 2005
Modified: 11:39:07 AM
Local activist Jonathan Leavitt ghostwrites a personal attack on former Reagan Baby Eddy Dyer...
i never do this stuff but i have to speak out on this...

jonathan leavitt and the reagan babies have started smearing me on their website; attacking my family including my recently deceased father, my music, slandering my friend eddie okeefe and poking fun at some very real and very painful experiences i have had over the past few years, including a suicide attempt that i barely survived in 2004.

after i made it clear to him and randy viscio (also of the reagan babies) that this was not okay, they made it very clear thati had no sense of humor and that the post would stay up...they also mailed it out to their entire list.

if jonathan had not brought the band and everyone on their mailing list into this it would still be between me and him and i wouldn't be bothering anyone with this stuff...

local organizers need to know what kind of mean-spirited energy they invite when dealing with jonathan, or the reagan babies and think long and hard over it.

i have attached excerpts from the mailer...

- "Dyer's world was also falling apart at the time on a much more personal level with one unsuccessful relationship after another. After getting involved with one married women, he briefly left the band and moved down to Washington, D.C. where he found himself a father of three. After roughly two weeks, Dyer fled back to Massachusetts, leaving behind a shattered romance and his collection of Air Supply albums."

- "But in 2004, things quickly began to deteriorate for Dyer (or Prima Dyer as other band members referred to him behind his back) as another personal relationship fell apart. Eddy was on the verge of a breakdown but managed to check himself into the "Elliot Smith Center for Emotionally Disturbed Musicians Who Feel the Urgent Need to Solidify Their Place in the History of Rock 'N Roll by Offing Themselves", just in time and a disaster was averted.."

-"Unfortunately, this was all that Eddy Dyer's fragile psyche could take and he quickly went into a tailspin. From their "Edwina" Dyer made his/her way to a convent over in Southern France where he/she now resides, cut off from the public and his adoring fans. VH1 tried to gain access to the convent, but was stopped by the high tech security that involved blasting Eddy Dyer solo records over and over again until you are nothing more then a shriveling mass of self-pitying mush."

hey those excerpts were kinda funny how can I get the whole thing? anyway, i would be flattered that a busy organizer like that guy spent so much time and energy thinking about me...are you guys in denial about your true feelings of gay male love or something?
and should this shit be posted with important stuff like the war?

Most activists are mentally ill.

Normal people are generally stupid and uncreative, so they go along with things as they are. Those who understand that this world is fucked up are usually abnormal. So it doesn't surprise me that a group of persons who call themselves activists would behave like fucking animals and hurt another activist. It happens all the time.

My personal advise is to not consider other activists your friends. Keep them at an arm's length and join with them only to do activism. For your personal life, bond with people who are not activists and do not share information about your personal life with activists.

Sounds paranoid but I've learned it from experience. Think of fellow activists as co-workers, not family.

I can forgive Leavitt, but I can't trust him. Iv'e
known Eddy and his famliy for years and saying that you fucked somebody's mother as public infomation, is allways lame in my world. Jonathan Leavitt has gotten alot of cool shit going,It's a shame that he's going in this direction.

am i missing something, or is that reagan babies website satire?'s pretty clear to any idiot that reads it that it's not to be taken seriously...

this has got to be a band stunt...i've heard these guys on MIT radio...never take anything they say about each other seriously...but they write great songs...

This is not a publicity stunt. Eddy Dyer no longer has anything to do with the Reagan Babies, and has even requested that they stop performing songs that he has written with the band. This includes songs that are used in the, "Jesus Christ Terrorist" performance.

What this is, is a response to a childish and insensitive attack by Leavitt, toward a former friend and fellow activist that went his own way and did his own thing. It shows a lapse of trust and solidarity in the left that is needed in these times, more than ever. While I understand what "Been There" says about treating fellow activists like co-workers, I have to disagree. I think you can make friends and form close bonds with other activists, but it won't happen without and end to backtalking and immature smear campaigns. Remember, if we can't get along and stand as one, then we'll never win any battles. Stand together and people like Jonathan will find themselves alone, without anyone to laugh at their foolish antics.

now that i've had some time to think of it, this really isn't worth any of our energies...the only thing you will find on my site about the reagan babies is how proud i am of the music we made together and that is not going to change.

i have spoken my piece in public about this for what i really want to be the last time...the intention was to expose this sort of meanness people deserve to know the sort of energy they are working for when they associate themselves with the reagan babies and make their own decisions without reprisal from any of us (this i whole-heartedly promise from my end).

jon and randy, you are entirely welcome to the publicity, but maybe you guys should rely a little more on the music.

bummer, this would have been such a cool stunt if it really were...and to think i am reading the biography of andy kaufman right now...

i am not sure if this was the appropriate format to put out the word about the babies but i just couldn't be silent when they got mean...i have to say i find myself glad that people are talking about the real issues and this article has been wooshed (is that what they call it?) to the back pages...

and i'm glad you like our songs...
