Ecuadorian President Again Called to Court

Ecuadorian President Again Called to Court
Quito, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) Pichincha Province district attorney has again demanded that Ecuador´s President Alfredo Palacio appear in court to answer questions about the scandal of the forging of his signature.

Pichincha Third Civil Court Judge María Elena Chávez rejected the government´s plea to revoke the disposition demanding the president´s court appearance as, in her opinion, it is legal to call the leader to appear in order to process his declaration.

Presidential Legal Secretary Roberto Gonzalez had said such appearance in a civil court is inappropriate in a criminal matter.

The forgery scandal concerns public positions, allegedly sold with the forged signature of Palacio, for positions in the Health Ministry, World Bank and the Ecuadorian Consulate in Malaysia, and involving 10 officials, including the president´s ex secretary, Yuri Baque, his ex attaché, and his sister, Susana Palacio.

Local political analysts say the forgery has exposed existing problems in the administration and confirmed the lack of transparency surrounding the president.

Since the scandal broke in August, Palacio´s popularity has fallen to 32 percent, the lowest since he took office on April 20.
