WEF- Yes or No?
03 Dec 2001
With less than two months until the World Economic Forum meets in NYC, activist organizing to protest have done little to get the word out. Unfourtunately, the organizers, and other activists in the global justice movement, have been sending mixed signals about the protests and have created confusion among others not "inside the loop".
The World Economic Forum has decided to hold its annual event in NYC at the Waldorf Astoria hotel instead of in Davos, Switzerland. While some groups have announced a call to protest the meeting (IAC, ACC, and Public Citizen (who urged NYC activsts to protest)) it seems as though little has been done to promote the upcoming protests. Also, it seems as though many of the activists involved are unsure about whether they are egaer to protest in NYC at all. This is clear by their actions (which are clearly less than enthusiastic). Alot of people outside of this small group (ACC, IAC, etc.) do not even know that there are protests scheduled. While some indymedia sites had carried notice of the WEF protest on their main pages, that information has been removed. Put it back! As a recent Newsweek article clearly shows, the corporate media (and therefore the "powers that be") already know that protests are sceduled, while many who would protest are left in the dark. While secuity culture is one thing, there is no reason not to provide basic information about upcoming protests for folks who want to show solidarity and/or participate. Do we need to read Newsweek to find out when the next big demo is?
