New Year's Resolutions for Activists

On January 31, the World Economic Forum, which usually meets in Davos Switzerland, will
hold its annual meeting in New York City. U.S. activists are planning to respond to the visit from the highly
controversial organization of economic elites with counter-summits and protests. Meanwhile, during the same
week, thousands of activists will be heading for Porto Alegre, Brazil to talk about alternatives at the second World
Social Forum.

With these events converging, and in a post-September 11th context of a "war on terrorism" characterized by fear,
jingoism and multi-billion dollar "national security" budgets, it seems like a good time to throw some ideas around
about the future. What's next for globalization activists: a more unified set of goals and strategies, or more
diversity? More convergences, or more community organizing? What do we really mean when we talk about global
solidarity, and what does that solidarity demand? How can we confront fundamentalism in its many forms, and
within our own ranks?
