Friday, November 11th, 5:00pm
Park St. T Station |
|
BAAM is organizing a candlelight vigil in memorial of the Haymarket martyr's executions by the law on Friday, November 11 at 5pm outside the Park Street Station. In 1886, a bomb was thrown from within a crowd, killing 19, at a rally for the 8 hour day in Haymarket Square, Chicago. Eight prominent anarchist organizers, some of whom were not even at the rally, were arrested and charged with murder. One committed suicide in prison, and four were hanged on November 11, 1887. The rest recieved pardon. On the anniversary of their executions, we will be making a few speeches and passing out fliers about the history of the struggle for eight-hour work day. We hope to see you there. |

it may not be clear to everyone from this announcement, so to clarify, the 8 accused were all innocent, and even the state admitted this later. Also, it is because of people like them in the struggle for the 8 hour day that we have an 8 hour day. |

one things that's really interesting is after the haymarket riot, the city of chicago built a statue of the cops that died, sort of their way of spitting on the labor movement. in 1969, the weather underground blew up that statue. |

It's likely but not definite that it'll still be going on then. |

If I'm not mistaken the statue was rebuilt by the city of Chicago and blown up by the Weather Underground 3 times until like a bunch of wussies the cops moved it to the safety of the Chicago Police Department where it is still on display. |
