The exponentially growing network of web pages using open editing (cf open publishing), called wikis, and best known for the wikipedia, will come to Boston in late June/early July 2006. To see how this decision was taken, you'll have to search yourself on the various wikis.

Formally speaking, the Wikimedia Foundation has a Board. But essentially anyone who spends some time editing wikipedia, wikibooks, wikinews, ... pages is automatically considered a member of the Wikimedia Foundation.

In practice, most decisions are very participative and non-hierarchical - because of the radical transparency and the open-publishing/open-editing software and culture.

All the same, as wikimedia gains in power, various political powers will try to control it, and it will tend to associate with and be influenced by traditional, hierarchical organisations. Moreover, 90% of people do not have internet access, and so cannot (yet) participate.

But this imperfect method is clearly popular - consensus spread of knowledge cannot be stopped: start participating now if you wish to influence the process.
