UFPJ's Bill Weinberg Supports the Occupation of Iraq
15 Jan 2006
Bill Weinberg and UFPJ support the occupation
Bill Weinberg of UFPJ says, "Slogans like "Bring the troops home" and "US out of Iraq" are handy for fitting on a placard, but they inevitably dodge the really tough questions. Having now plunged Iraq into social entropy, destroyed the country's infrastructure and brought to a boil myriad ethnic and religious conflicts which had been simmering under the Saddam dictatorship, it might be the height of irresponsibility for the US to just unilaterally withdraw. It would, in fact, be a violation of the responsibilities of an occupying power under international law."

He could have meant a lot by that, and this quote lacks context. Was he talking about the need to rebuild? To be sure that we don't leave Iraq to Halliburton's depradations? Or was he talking about keeping an occupation in place?

Gratuitous UfPJ-bashing is on the rise since they told ANSWER where they could stick it. There are plenty of real critiques of UfPJ, but if you can't be bothered to write more than a 4 line accusation that UfPJ supports war or kicks puppies or whatever, you're not aedding much to the discussion.

So I followed the link above after posting my comment, afraid that I had posted too soon. I found a few interesting things there:

1. The article is from October 2003. Real breaking scoop, you have there.

2. While the post above refers to "Bill Weinberg of UfPJ," Weinberg is critical of UfPJ and refers to them as "minimally legitimate." A search for "Weinberg" on the UfPJ website only turns up two hits, both of which are for Hedy Weinberg, someone from the ACLU of Tennessee. So what's the basis for claiming that Weinberg represents UfPJ in any way, shape, or form?

I'd STRONGLY urge people to read the article linked above. It will show how disingenuous the accusation from "stop the war" is.

So stop the war, I'm calling the question. Why did you post this? Did you just not research what you said, or were you trying to make a disingenuous accusation? Is there a larger agenda behind it?

This is not how we build a movement.
