Corruption is the Rule, and Acceptance is Patriotic.
25 Feb 2002
Democratic institutions require open, honest debate.
Democratic institutions require open, honest debate. The most meek person must feel confident that their opinion matters. All people must have the information they need to make life decisions. Everyone needs control over their work in order to be more productive, and less wasteful.

Today, corruption is the rule, and acceptance is patriotic. Attorney General Ashcroft implies we have the duty to remain silent. People sense corruption in their workplace but fear to ask questions. Billions of dollars in advertizing convince many consumers to shop for happiness. Corporate media do not report why kids work 12 hour days sewing our clothes to protect their business partners. Many of us live with marvelous technologies, but do not want to think about "third world" families who live in shacks on garbage dumps. We burn ever more Arab oil while winters grow shorter. People eat poisoned food, and wave flags made in chinese sweatshops.

Fundamental change is scary. What would our rulers do if they suddenly lost control of the government and were under pressure to reform the corporate structure? Would they destroy the presses and tv towers rather than pass over control to democratically run institutions? Would they create chaos and blame it on (democratic) mob mentality? Fear is a great source of power.

Fear is our enemy. Life will be happier when everyone is cooperating to make a new world. The world isn't fair. But it will be more fair. Poeple are joining together all over the world to demand basic rights for all people. When everyone has the right to good food, running water, honest education, and democratic institutions, we will have the power to pursue happiness.
