"Newton’s finest hour" is FBI’s nightmare WED 7:45pm Newton city Hall
21 Feb 2006
Two Newton residents have asked the Board of Aldermen to review the incident at the Newton Main Library in which the Mayor and the Library Director insisted on the police and the FBI obtaining a warrant before searching the library computers. These two residents strongly oppose the stand taken by Mayor Cohen and Kathy Glick-Weil.
The Programs and Services committee of the Board of Aldermen will take up this issue on Wednesday, February 22, at 7:45 pm in Room 222 at Newton City Hall.

Newton’s library director and Mayor will be called to the carpet on Wednesday for refusing to surrender library computers to the FBI and state police who had arrived without a warrant after a "terrorist" threat was emailed to Brandeis University from the public library’s computer. Local papers have been filled with accolades and admonishments of the duo for their decision to rebuff the feds for almost 10 hours until they could produce a warrant.

It is hoped that many of us who oppose warrant-less searches attend. We need to speak out at the local level against domestic surveillance and for the Constitution.

We wont know until we see the actual threat but this was probably a case of a Zionist threatening a Jewish institution just to smear Arabs or Palestine supporters. If you stop by the Newton library check out the book 'Jew Verses Jew' which has an account of an area Rabbi who escaped indictment in Florida for a synagogue bombing attempt. The plot involved a call to the cops claiming it was a Palestinian operation when in truth it was a friend of the rabbis who was bitter about peace progress with the Arabs.

IN THAT CONNECTION, PLEASE KEEP THE DATE OF SUNDAY, MARCH 5, 4 -6 P.M OPEN: There will be an emergency Town Meeting on domestic surveillance, organized by the Massachusetts ACLU and with Barney Frank as speaker, at Newton North High School. Details to be sent later.
