We will discuss outreach in the LGBT community around the
call to action below, as well as ongoing organizing in our
community against war and racism and lgbt oppression,
including the right-wing initiative for an anti-same-sex
marriage law in Massachusetts. Come, tell others, and let's
plan together for a strong visible lgbt progressive voice at
the march on Washington and here at home!

URGENT CALL TO ACTION TO LESBIAN, GAY, BI AND TRANS
JOIN THE LESBIAN, GAY, BI AND TRANS CONTINGENT AT THE
NATIONAL MARCH ON WASHINGTON AGAINST WAR AND RACISM
SATURDAY, APRIL 20
Gather at the White House at 11:00 a.m.
Since September 11, the attention of the progressive
movement has been rightly focused on stopping the war
against the people of Afghanistan, Palestine, the imminent
war against Iraq and the racist round up of immigrants in
the U.S. At the same time, lesbian, gay, bi and trans people
have been under increased attack on the streets and in the
During a "700 Club" show shortly after the attack on the
World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Pat Robertson blamed
lesbians and gay men for the tragedy. Jerry Falwell joined
with Robertson after the collapse of Enron to point their
own scandal-coated fingers at lesbians and gays for that,
In Massachusetts, right-wing hate mongers are attempting to
push through a state version of the Defense of Marriage Act.
This Mass. DOMA would ensure that no same-sex marriages
would ever be possible. It would also prohibit any civil
unions from ever being initiated.
Conservatives in Vermont continue to work to rescind the
legalization of civil unions that was won in that state.
Lesbian mothers, like Dawn Huber in Alabama, continue to
have their children stolen from them by rabidly anti-gay and
racist judges. Trans women are routinely denied their due
compensation for the deaths of their legally wedded
husbands, like J'Noel Gardiner in Kansas.
Lesbian, gay, bi and trans youth make up the largest
percentage of teen suicides and homeless youth. The
religious right persists in their efforts to block sexual
education from taking place in public schools. Not only
would sexual education courses help young people learn how
to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and other STDs, but also
the classes could offer a forum for diversity training and
help to create a more affirming environment for lgbt youth.
Public bathrooms pose a dangerous threat to trans people on
a daily basis, as evidenced by the case of Dean Spade, an
FTM transgender person who was beaten by cops and arrested
in New York City during the anti-World Economic Forum
protests in February. The reason for the brutality is that
Spade was attempting to use the rest room at Grand Central
These are the same racist cops who raped and tortured Abner
Louima, killed Amadou Diallo in a hail of 41 bullets, shot
and killed Patrick Dorismond, strangeled Anthony Baez and
are still brutalizing people of color, lesbian, gay, bi and
trans people and poor people every day.
In February, our movement lost another revolutionary
transgender activist and leader in the struggle, Sylvia
Rivera. Sylvia was one of the original Stonewall combatants
and remained on the front lines of the fight against racism,
bigotry and imperialism until the end. She stood strong with
her rainbow flag on every issue, from freeing Mumia
Abu-Jamal to ending the U.S./UN war on Yugoslavia because
she knew that the struggle to end racism and war is the same
fight to end lesbian, gay, bi and trans oppression.
On April 20th in Washington, we must stand shoulder to
shoulder-Black, Latino, Native, Arab, Asian, white and
Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans, in a real rainbow of resistance
to Bush's endless war against oppressed people at home and
