A Letter to Noam Chomsky

A Letter to Noam Chomsky

Afectuosamente

Dear Noam Chomsky
Distinguished thinker and fighter

The individuals who have presented this letter before you, are young people committed with the same ideas you promote and profess. We are the youth of a generation that struggles everyday in the Dominican Republic, a country who suffers and has suffered at the expense of the neo liberal doctrine and the imperialist regime, in due part because of the actions of a dominant social class who overlook the needs of a country in dire need of direction. An oligarchic class who are more committed with North American interests than national affairs.

Although this half island is a very remote place in the world, you have a following among young Dominicans who read your books, because of the strength of your convictions and the coherency in your actions and struggle.

Today, that we know of your presence in Santo Domingo, we are highly rejoiced. Your visit to this small and impoverished country should encourage the resistance, promote the struggle and fight against neo liberal doctrines and capitalism, and ignite the discussion of all of these ideas.

However, the individuals who have brought you here today are the same individuals and members of a dominant political class who are responsible for our country’s lack of development, corruption and neo liberal policies. The individuals who bring you to our country, are at the disposition of the imperialist regime and multinational corporations.

La Fundación Global (FUNGLODE) which is English for Global Foundation for Democracy, where your conferences will take place, cannot validate the means by which it was funded because it was built on money from past administrative corruption, which is at the forefront of one of the many serious issues affecting Dominican Republic today.

President Fernandez, who is also leader of FUNGLODE, has continued in the tradition of many oligarchic presidents who have not been committed to this country’s well being and economic development, disrupting and greatly affecting the more populous classes.

He is the president that ratified the DR-CAFTA, who granted impunity to American troops under the Haya ‘s Tribunal, who is currently allowing the establishment of US marines in our homeland in operation “New Horizons 2006.” He is a president who has governed under strict International Monetary Fund scrutiny.

The individuals who bring you to our country today represent everything you so actively fight and speak out against. These individuals, alongside President Fernandez and FUNGLODE, represent the dominant political class we fight.

This being said, we courteously address you to inform you of the matter at hand, and leaving open the possibility of organizing another activity more open to the people at another venue. This will be a chance for you to make contact with people with the same values as you, true political activists, who carry on the fight against injustice and who fight for our country’s liberation, unlike your current hosts who stop at nothing to maintain the current status quo. Please contact us as soon as possible for this purpose.
