Invaders with Guns, Invaders with Blenders - a commentary
06 Apr 2002
“Sharon is both the architect and prime builder of the Israeli settlements," notes Prof. Amiram Goldblum, the head of Peace Now's Settlement Watch team. If Sharon couldn’t do it with guns, he’d do it with houses full of small appliances and belligerent Israelis.
As I write this, Ariel Sharon’s ill-named Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has invaded Palestine once again on a fool’s mission. Believing they will stop suicide bombings or gain even more territory for their ongoing expansion into Palestinian lands, these Israelis defy both world opinion and common sense. We are not surprised. Rightwing Israeli leaders like Ariel Sharon have been all about expansion and colonization for decades. Today we witness the bloody results of such policies. In an endless cycle of violence and retribution, Palestinian Arabs and Israeli Jews butcher, beat, and berate each other. We have all forgotten who hit whom first. It hardly matters anymore. Sharon, his backers in Washington and all their many minions claim the present invasion is in “defense” of Israel; in response to the so-called Passover Massacre; to rid the camps of suicide bombers. Whether you buy such motives or not, more innocent civilians are paying the price in blood and terror. Medical personal, journalists, peace activists, and innocent bystanders are being targeted by the IDF who appear for all the world like Storm Troopers. It is sheer madness. And, it is getting very old.

Today they invade with tanks and guns, but the invasion has gone on for a long time. Sharon began establishing so-called settlements in Palestine in the early 1980s. As Minister of Housing from 1990 to ’92 he increased the number of colonies many times over. Palestinians were methodically pushed from their homes and olive groves as the colonization increased. Even a cursory view of the map over the past fifty years shows a growing Israel and a shrinking Palestine. Why am I thinking of South Africans and American Indians here? The history may differ, but the results are the same. Everyone thinks God’s on their side; that THEY are the Chosen People. What garbage.

Other Arab nations in the region are outraged. Demonstrations against the invasion increase around the globe. The UN keeps passing resolutions that fall on deaf Israeli ears. The present occupant in the Whitehouse says one day that he knows Palestinian Chairman Arafat “can’t stop every suicide bomber”, and claims another day that Arafat is not doing enough to stop the bombers. His envoy tries brokering deals that are broken on arrival; patently unfair to the Palestinian people. And through all this Ariel Sharon continues his relentless single-minded expansion of the Israeli state. More than any other single source, it is he who is the problem. Without Ariel Sharon peace may be possible. With him it seems impossible. Maybe Sharon should go to hell, where he rightfully belongs. He’ll get there soon enough anyway.
