Picket Tufts, Thursday, April 11, 6:30pm
11 Apr 2002
Flyer - Michael Moore is giving a talk at Tufts, not open to the public. They won't let me videotape it for Somerville Community Access Television.

Picket Tufts for not letting local media into Michael Moore talk

Michael Moore

author of Stupid White Men

speaking at
Tufts University

tonight! April 11
7pm Pearson hall, room 104

But guess what?
You can't go.

It's private. For students only.

Okay, well, I guess they're entitled to have private events, so I respectfully requested permission to tape it for Somerville Community Access Television. Moore's people had no problem with it, but said I probably wouldn't get permission from Tufts, since it's a student-only event. Said they tried to work it differently but couldn't. Tufts will not bend.

Let's see. Tufts doesn't pay any taxes because they're (wink, wink) a non-profit organization. Hello? The guy who picks up the trash or serves you a burger is a non-profit, day care workers are non-profits, mothers are the original non-profit. But Tufts and Harvard and the rest have actually convinced the mean, nasty old IRS they don't make a profit? Who are they kidding?

It's a small thing to ask. That a small crew come in and tape this important event for Somerville and Medford residents who, due to finances or disability or jobs or kids or whatever, can't get to Harvard Square or downtown Boston to hear Michael Moore talk about our country.

This is about greed, and all the media being owned by a shrinking handful of moguls, and the end of democracy. This is about whether we want to stand by, like my cement-finisher father used to, saying, "You just can't fight city hall, Sharon," even while he never stopped trying.

Meet us there around 6:30 tonight. Bring signs, bring friends, brings kids, bring ATTITUDE (in fact, bring teenagers, who have PhD's in attitude). Bring cameras and camcorders and we'll put THAT on Somerville television.

To get to Pearson Hall, take College Avenue from Davis Square towards Medford, go around rotary to continue on College Ave, take Talbot Ave (2nd left). Pearson Hall is on the left a short way down.
