Community Servings employees unite to solve common problems
08 May 2002
Employees will be stronger with link to others in SEIU Local 285 who do the same work
[Roxbury, MA] Employees at Community Services -- a non-profit agency that feeds people in their homes -- have joined Local 285 to win fairness and respect and gain a strong voice in the organization's future.

"We're like a family here, always looking out for each other," said Manny Dupont, the organization's shipper and receiver. "Our union will help us work even better to solve problems."

Workers voted overwhelmingly on Friday to gain the right to negotiate with management.

"Our solidarity was so strong because we knew that the each "yes" vote sent a message that we're in this together," Dupont added. "I thank God for our victory."

"It also helped to know that we were not alone. Strong support from the community gave us all confidence."

Service workers from a number of small non-profit home health and home care agencies already belong to SEIU Local 285.

SEIU Local 285 is a statewide union of health care workers and public employees with more than 11,000 members.
