I hope that many realize you are not really deterring the recruitment of willing men and women to serve their country. If anything you are allowing the recruiters time off or chances to catch up on their many phone requests for info.

The turnout looks kinda low.

you're completely wrong about the demonstration having no effect. the recruitment center locked it's doors while we were there, effectively keeping any potential recruits from going inside. in addition, by providing information about alternatives to the military people are more likely to consider all their options and less people are willing to sign up. events like these are much more effective in attacking the war than regular demonstrations, which do not disrupt recruitment, business as usual, OR war profiteers.

Eric you are sadly mistaken! Some recruiters look forward tothe riff raff showing up. Lets them get out of the office to meet with people or frees them up to return phone calls. Either way you are helping the troops and it is greatly appreciated!

I have a funny feeling that "Veteran for Peace" is not a member of that proud organization. Hard to know, but...

I do think that there are more and less productive ways to do actions like this, and real constructive criticism is welcome. In this case, though, if Veteran for Peace is indeed offering this in a constructive spirit, I have to disagree with his/her point.

A recruitment center is in part a stationary advertisement. They hope to attract walk-by traffic. Quite often, there are one or two recruiters hanging out in the doorwaywhich helps to increase the image of accessibility. I doubt that many go in right off the street, but cultivating an appealing image over time is important. If it weren't, there wouldn't be a display int he window or a large sign above the door.

Protests (when the office is open) do disrupt this image. I They probably do allow recruiters to catch up on phone calls, but I don't hear any of the protesters claiming that they shut everything down completely. It's a disruption, with all the impact and limits that implies.
