University of Massachusetts Resident Assistants made history this year by
becoming the first group of undergraduate student workers in the country to
organize a union. They democratically voted to join UAW Local 2322 in a
state certified election last March.

Yet the University is refusing to bargain with the union and is in violation
of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 150E. In response to the
administration’s vow to drag the process through the courts for “four or
five years”, RA union supporters recently staged an act of non-violent civil
disobedience at the Whitmore Administration building.

The University responded to the sit-in with the arrest of 35 protesters—the
first mass arrest on campus in a decade. In addition, the administration is
taking disciplinary action against some of the protestors, including
suspension. The UMass administration is irresponsibly wasting our valuable
tax dollars in a time of severe budget cuts to retain a high priced
union-busting law firm.

We strongly believe that the outcome of this high profile battle will set an
important precedent for union organizing and bargaining throughout the
state, especially in the public sector and at colleges. We are asking for
the support of all area union members and leaders, so we can show a united
front against using state resources for union busting.
