Controversial Harvard Commencement Speech on 'jihad' Wins Polite Reception
The Associated Press
Published: Jun 7, 2002

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - An American Muslim student's commencement address at Harvard that used the term "jihad" earned a polite reception and only a few protesters.

There was even a small standing ovation Thursday for biomedical engineering student Zayed Yasin at the 351st commencement ceremony in Harvard Yard.

The 22-year-old aspiring doctor had originally titled his address: "Of Faith and Citizenship: My American Jihad."

But Yasin dropped the subtitle after some students said a speech on such an inflammatory subject after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks should explicitly condemn terrorist violence.

Yasin, a native of suburban Scituate and a former president of the Harvard Islamic Society, said he received an e-mailed death threat during the controversy.

In Arabic, jihad means struggle, though it also is a term for holy war. Yasin focused his speech, which he did not alter, on the meaning of jihad as struggle for personal growth and for wider peace and justice.

The term jihad, Yasin said, "has been corrupted and misinterpreted, both by those who do and do not claim to be Muslims, and we saw last fall, to our great national personal loss, the results of this corruption.

"Where is our struggle, our jihad?" he said. "Whether on our way to an investment bank in New York or to Sierra Leone to work with orphans, Harvard graduates have a responsibility to leave their mark on the world."

Only a couple of protesters were visible during the address. Dozens gave Yasin a standing ovation, including an entire section of students.
