New Venezuela Coup Brewing?
19 Jun 2002
Modified: 07:36:20 PM
There are indications that a new coup project is brewing in Venezuela. What are we going to do about it?
In April, US supported civilian and military conspirators briefly overthrew Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, but a popular uprising against the coup by poor Venezuelans, supported by pro-Chavez elements of the military, quickly restored him to power. But if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

Over the ensuing two months, there has never been a quiet moment in Venezuela, as the [unlawful and illegitimate] United States government has continued to work via Venezuelan business and military leaders, as well as some sold-out labor leaders, to get a new coup going. Just a few highlights on what has been going on:

* The leadership of the CTV, one of Venezuela's labor federations, has called for another general strike, openly stating that the purpose is to throw out President Chavez. Strangely enough for a labor federation, they are coordinatng this with the main business federations.

* The president-for-a-day installed by the coup-plotters, businessman Pedro Carmona, escaped house arrest, got political asylum in Colombia, and as you read this, is in the United States, presumeably to go to Disney World or something.

* There have been several bloodthirsty announcements by military officers that they are going to carry out another coup. They have transmitted this message through interviews with Venezuelan and foreign media. One of the chilling statements being made is that in a second coup attempt, there may have to be a "bloodbath" carried out against low-income Chavez supporters in the Bolivarian circles.

* The US government [sic] is stepping up its criticism of the Chavez Administration, claiming that US citizens are being "harassed". This could become the pretext for US [CIA-Mossad] intervention in Venezuela.

* July 5th is the day the Venezuelan government is scheduled to announce the yearly round of military promotions, appointments and retirements. Many think that the coup will take place on or before that day, because anti-Chavez officers can expect to be given early retirement or to be reassigned at that time, with pro-Chavez officers being put in to replace them.

If a new coup is attempted and pro-Chavez forces fight back physically, we could indeed have a bloodbath and even the beginnings of a civil war in Venezuela. Venezuela is a major oil supplier to the US.

According to Karen Talbot of the International Center for Justice and Peace, George Bush Sr. (that's right, the former president), stood to gain a lot had the April coup had been successful, because the plan was to privatize the nationally-owned Venezuelan oil industry, with some of the goodies going to a company linked to daddy Bush.

Now is the time to be raising this issue in your community group, church or labor union, getting all kinds of organizations on the record as opposing a right-wing coup, and especially as opposing the support of the US government [sic] for both the preparations for a coup, and for the bloodshed and repression that doubtless would follow a successful overthrow of President Chavez.

It is especially important to join the national movement within organized labor to get the AFL-CIO leadership to desist from support for the Venezuelan CTV (Venezuelan Workers' Confederation, the labor fed - which is not the only labor federation in Venezuela - which has been working to overthrow President Chavez).

Resolutions have been passed by a number of central labor bodies across the US to this effect. It would seem that the American Center for International Labor Solidarity, a body of the national AFL-CIO, has channeled money from the US government's [sic] "National Endowment for Democracy" to the CTV; though this is by no means as extreme an activity as those carried out by the old American Federation for Free labor Development (AIFLD), which used to serve as a CIA front in the Latin American labor movement, it should nevertheless be challenged by conscientious labor activists and trade union members.

The point to make is that the Chavez Administration is working against corporate-controlled globalization, and those who would overthrow it are helping this same corporate globalization, so no US labor leader, activist or union should support such an overthrow.

The Smell of Fear
19 Jun 2002
Provisional US President Jon Chance posts real news almost every day.

The daily fear posted in cowardly, anonymous and slanderous "responses" from Boston's puppet-activists demonstrates the difference between mindless little criminals and informed citizens.

The NAZI-NATO logo above symbolizes the forces by whom you're manipulated - and your true colors in black and white.

Neither "right" nor "left", but ahead.
