Upcoming Films:

May 17- My Girlfriend Did It (1995)
Director Dawn West (40 min)

This powerful and sensitive video defines the dynamics of women's same-sex abusive relationships, and examines the impact of oppression when addressing woman-to-woman battering. Women who have been in abusive relationships tell their stories, and offer testimony about the unique situations faced by women with same sex partners. Their fear of coming out, their particular difficulty finding resources in rural areas, the harm done to family and friends as well as the abused woman are all discussed. Experts also talk about the need for community education, community resources, more research on the issue, and the profound need for support for women battered by women. This program was produced in 1995, but is still as needed and relevant as it was in the past.

After the film there will be a community talk back led by The Network/La Red: Ending abuse in lesbian, bisexual women, and transgender communities, a Massachusetts based social justice/social change organization dedicated to ending partner abuse. For more information about The Network/La Red or the free bilingual services they offer, visit www.thenetworklared.org.

June 28 - Toliet Training (2003)

A film by Tara Mateik and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (30 min)

The video addresses the persistent discrimination, harassment, and violence that people who transgress gender norms face in gender segregated bathrooms. Using the stories of people who have been harassed, arrested or beaten for trying to use bathrooms, Toilet Training focuses on bathroom access in public space, in schools, and at work.

Includes discussion of legal questions of equal access; the health effects associated with "holding it"; and the social consequences of experiencing pervasive discrimination in bathrooms and other gendered spaces. Interviews with lawyers, social workers and activists explore current law and policy, and highlight recent and future policy changes necessary to enable equal bathroom access for all. Concluding with examples of policy change, Toilet Training provides a necessary foundation to public education and organizing to address this overlooked issue.

After the film there will be a community talk back led by the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition, an organization dedicated to ending discrimination on the basis of gender identity and gender expression. MTPC educates the public, lobby state and local government, encourage political activism, and empower community members through collective action. For more information visit www.masstpc.org.

Please Don't Feed the Trolls

Wikipedia defines an Internet Troll as: "An Internet troll is either a person who sends messages on the Internet hoping to entice other users into angry or fruitless responses, or a message sent by such a person." Boston IMC strives to provide both a grassroots media resource as well as a forum for people to contribute to a meaningful discussion about local issues.
