The SHORTWAVE REPORT 9/13/02 °Listen Globally! (english)
12 Sep 2002
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.5MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast upon notification. China, Spain, Netherlands, Russia, and Cuba.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (September 13) is up at the website in both broadcast quality 13.5MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:30) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired at 7pm PDST this Friday evening at KZYX/Z Philo CA and you MIGHT be able to stream via (It hasn't worked recently)
There are several other streams that work quite well- Freak Radio Santa Cruz streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm (PDST) and on Monday at 9amPDST.
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)-
streaming the SWR at Fri 10:30PM/ Sat 10:30AM PM/ Sun 10:30AM PDST
and the Partytown streams are great and informative-
This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Spanish National Radio, Radio Netherlands, the Voice of Russia, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From China- The Iraqi VP says his country is trying to reach a comprehensive solution with the UN, as long as the UN is willing to lift the embargo. Iraq continues to deny the development of weapons of mass destruction, and announced an October referendum on continuing Saddam Husseinís presidency.
From Spain- most Latin Americans disapprove of the US/British war on Afghanistan and are wary of a strike on Iraq. The Bush administration approved another $42 million in military aid to Columbia.
From Netherlands- In Columbia, new measures have been enacted against left-wing rebels, including arrests without filing charges. Chileís annual recollection of Pinochetís victims from the coup of Sept 11th, 1973, was low key and without riots. Then an opinion on how the events of 911 have affected the middle east conflict. Israeli peace activists may soon face criminal charges for naming Israeli war criminals at the International Criminal Court.
From Russia- Russia has been testing a new pipeline from Russia to Turkey beneath the Black Sea. Then a scorecard on countries opposed to a military campaign against Iraq. The US State Dept held a conference on dealing with anti-American attitudes around the world, which it sees only as a problem of Public Relations.
From Cuba- European leaders critiqued US threats of attacking Iraq last weekend. Outgoing UN Human Rights chief Mary Robinson spoke Tuesday about the use of the 911 attacks to roll back human rights globally, with the US making the biggest changes. Indigenous groups in Mexico are mobilizing to counter a Supreme Court decision that imposes a greatly limited Bill of Native Rights.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
