FLORIDA FARMWORKERS VISIT BOSTON!

On Oct. 9-11, members of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), the farmworker organization spearheading the national boycott of Taco Bell, will meet with labor, student, faith and community groups in the Boston area to spread the word about their ongoing fight to end "sweatshops in the fields."

KEY EVENTS:

Oct. 9, 4:00 PM, Ticknor Lounge (Boylston Hall behind Widener Library)

Oct. 10, 6:00 PM JANITOR FUNDRAISER/CELEBRATION
Fundraiser for Janitors at Santa Rosa de Lima church (600 Broadway, Chelsea) Coalition of Immokalee Workers will attend event in solidarity with janitors...

Oct. 11, 4:00 - 6:00 PM COMMUNITY-WIDE LEAFLETING ACTION AT BU TACO BELL (700 Commonwealth Ave., BU East T stop)
Join farmworkers in creative, spirited protest at BU Taco Bell. Immediately following the action, all are invited to BU for refreshments, video, and presentation.

Background:
Florida tomato pickers work for stavation wages with absolutely no benefits or job security, no overtime pay, no right to organize without fear of retaliation, and, in the most extreme cases, under conditions of modern-day slavery.

Fast-food corporations like Taco Bell benefit directly from the poverty of immigrant workers who pick the produce that goes into the food they sell. In Immokalee, FL, farmworkers who pick tomatoes for Taco Bell are among the worst paid, least protected workers in the country. Taco Bell receives cheap, high-quality US tomatoes -- boosting its bottom line -- thanks to the hard-working Florida farmworkers who toil in sweatshop conditions.

But today, farmworkers with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers have had enough. The CIW is spearheading a national boycott against Taco Bell, calling for an end to sweathops in the fields.
