At Saturday Rally, Boston will Stand Up to Win Justice for Janitors! (english)
18 Oct 2002
Rally on Saturday, October 19 at 12:00 Noon, Copley Square, Boston.
Boston, MA – Boston's striking janitors and the community labor coalition Jobs with Justice will hold a public rally on Saturday to focus attention on the key issues of health care and full time jobs that cleaning contractors stubbornly refuse to agree to.

Featured at the rally will be several striking janitors along with Billy Bragg, an internationally famous folk rock singer from England who frequently supports labor causes. The rally will be MC'd by Rocio Saenz, an SEIU union leader and Horace Small from the Union of Minority Neighborhoods.

After the rally, the janitors and their supporters will march down Newbury Street.

"It's time for the major building owners in Boston and the people with money to end this strike," said Russ Davis, director of Jobs with Justice. "That’s why we are taking our message downtown on Saturday."

"It's really encouraging to see all the support," said Ivan Ramirez, a janitor who works for UNICCO at 100 Federal Street. "People are giving us the money and food that we need to continue our strike for as long as it takes."

At the rally Jobs with Justice will announce more detailed plans for an October 24 "Day of Conscience" when activists will step-up peaceful disruptions to bring more pressure on the building owners and their cleaning contractors to agree to provide health care and more full time jobs for Boston's janitors.

Other speakers at the rally will include representatives from the student, religious, immigrant, and health care communities.

The rally on Saturday, October 19 will be at 12:00 Noon, Copley Square, Boston.

Strike supporters from Cambridge will meet at 77 Mass Ave (at MIT) at Noon to march across the Charles River to join the Copley Square rally. Supporters from Roxbury and other Boston neighborhoods will meet at Northeastern University at 11:30 am to walk to Copley Square.
