Union members ratify new union contract with Boston Medical Center… (english)
18 Oct 2002
New wage step plan and ‘living wage’ guarantee sets new teaching hospital standards for service and technical workers at Boston Medical Center.
After a three-month campaign that involved hundreds of union members, management at Boston Medical Center (BMC) agreed to long sought after changes that will make it a more attractive place to work, improving employee recruitment and retention. The biggest change is a new twelve-step wage plan that provides for seniority-based raises resulting in 3 to 7.9 percent increases this year. In the second and third years of the contract, most employees (below step 10) will receive 6 percent raises.

About 200 BMC workers will be brought up to above the City of Boston’s “living wage” standard -- $10.55 per hour -- along with their regular wage increases. All new employee start rates will be at that scale or above.

The new 3 year agreement was ratified in a secret ballot vote by 703 to 37.

“This is a breakthrough agreement for all hospital workers in Boston,” said Celia Wcislo, a former clerical worker at the BMC and president of SEIU Local 285. “It’s one of the few contracts with a teaching hospital that guarantees workers two raises per year.”

Significantly, the contract also fully maintains the current employer-provided health insurance plan with no premium or co-pay changes.

About 1,700 service, technical, professional and business office workers at BMC are members of SEIU Local 285 and AFSCME Local 1489.
