O'KEEFE URGES MA CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO VOTE FOR PEACE AND AGAINST IRAQ WAR (english)
22 Oct 2002
Our nation is on the verge of launching a war against Iraq, a nation that offers little, if any, threat to the United States. James O'Keefe, Green Party candidate for State Treasurer, called on the Massachusetts congressional delegation to vote against Bush's proposal for a pre-emptive war against Iraq. The following is the letter James O'Keefe is sent to the Mass. congressional delegation.
October 2nd, 2002

To the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation:

Reports in the press and the position statements of prominent members of the Bush Administration found on the Project for the New American Century web site (www.newamericancentury.org) convince me that the actions of that administration are undermining activism towards building a world in which peace and justice are the prevailing values.

Rather than allow the military strength of the United States to support the peace efforts of the United Nations, the Bush administration has:

rejected or failed to ratify international treaties designed to prevent war and bring criminal leaders such as Saddam Hussein before the World Court;
acted to weaken peaceful regional alliances such as the European Union;
declared that it will take any military action it sees necessary to maintain supremacy in all areas of interest;
violated its own commitments to free trade by selective protectionism;
asserted that it will act to prevent any state or alliance of states from threatening through free competition its economic superiority;
sought to justify this policy by asserting the cultural and political superiority of the values of American society.
I believe that most Americans do not seek world domination. I ask that the Massachusetts congressional delegation, all members of the Democratic Party, expose the Bush party agenda for world dominion and the suppression of dissent within our country. I expect the Democratic Party to offer an alternative to Bush’s imperialism in the coming election. Any compromise with imperialist agendas will abet them.

Let us not embark upon a devastating war in Iraq and the Middle East for the sake of securing oil supplies. Let us not waste countless American and Iraqi lives and hundreds of billions of dollars in an attack on Iraq and the resulting occupation. Let us not thwart the desire of other nations to find ways of prospering with greater social equality and less damage to the earth than we have.

Put a stop to Unilateralism, doctrines of American Exceptionalism, and other expressions of Manifest Destiny. These can only lead to devastating wars and destructive hatreds. The rhetoric of the bully has no place in international affairs, nor has it a place within our own democracy. Despite terrorist attacks, despite the failures of our government to protect the lives and the welfare of the American people, we remain strong. Let us learn to walk softly and live with our neighbors in a world of peace and justice.

Sincerely,

James O’Keefe
Green Party Nominee for Massachusetts State Treasurer
