James O'Keefe Polling at 8% in Treasurer Race Suggests the Value of Open Debates

SOMERVILLE – James O'Keefe was thrilled by the 8% showing he received in the latest 7NEWS-Suffolk University poll released October 7th. In that poll, Democrat Tim Cahill received 35% of the vote, Republican Dan Grabauskas received 22% of the vote, and 32% of voters were undecided. O’Keefe’s standing shows that he is a strong and viable candidate who has performed well in State Treasurer debates and has proved that he deserves as much attention as the major party State Treasurer candidates. "8% is just a start for us. I know that as more voters hear my message we will win," said O'Keefe.

He attributes his high showing to his performance in two debates, as well as his platform, which includes investing in peace, socially responsible investments, and communities, and working to get corporations to clean up their act. “My message of social and environmental responsibility is really resonating with voters as they watch with anger the drum-beating for war going on in Washington and the dire state of our economy,” stated O’Keefe.

Since the primary, O’Keefe has participated in two debates. The business radio station, WBIX co-sponsored a debate with Suffolk University Law School on September 30. The debate was covered by many newspapers and mentioned by WCVB. "By including all of the candidates in the debate, the debate sponsors performed a great service to voters by giving them the opportunity to hear the platforms of all the candidates," said O'Keefe.

O'Keefe appeared with the two other candidates at a televised debate on WLVI, aired on Sunday, October 6th at 8:30am. WGBH is scheduled to hold a second televised debate among all three candidates for state treasurer on October 16th. "Voters are paying attention to the treasurer's race and with more debates they will be able to make a better decision about who they support," stated O'Keefe.

He is encouraged by the recent announcement of two gubernatorial debates that will include all five candidates, especially Green Party nominee Jill Stein, and hopes that the final debate on October 29th will also include all five candidates. "As the State Treasurer debates have shown, allowing all candidates to participate gives the voters the opportunity to make a truly informed decision about who they want running their government," added O'Keefe.

James O'Keefe as a True Reformist Candidate

As a clean elections candidate, O’Keefe is committed to act as an independent watchdog for the people of the Commonwealth. O’Keefe is the only State Treasurer candidate proposing that the Commonwealth use part of the $26 billion state pension fund to invest in local communities democratically. Working with other pension and socially responsible mutual funds, he will ensure that our share proxies are used to challenge excessive pay for executives; increase employee and shareholder participation on boards of directors; and make sure that corporations adhere to humane labor and ecologically sound environmental standards.
