Press Release

Senator Kennedy and Shannon O'Brien to Join Picket Line On Saturday, November 2 at 3:45pm

Support for the fight of the GE workers to defend their jobs against corporate greed is growing. Senator Kennedy, a senior member of Senate Armed Forces Committee will be joining Massachusetts Treasurer and AFL-CIO endorsed Gubernatorial candidate Shannon O'Brien on the picket lines for a rally at 3:45pm Saturday, November 2 at 1000 Western Avenue in Lynn (Rt 107). Senator Kennedy has indicated he will speak on the matter of defense jobs being shipped overseas.

"The era of GE announcing engine orders at the front gate while secretly shipping our jobs out the back gate is over," says IUE-CWA local 201 President Jeff Crosby.

Congressman John Tierney, State Senator Tom McGee, Lynn Mayor Chip Clancy and area State Representatives as well as clergy and other community leaders have come to the Local 201 Union Hall to express solidarity on the issues with local 201.

SEIU local 615 members, fresh from the recent "Justice for Janitors" battles in Boston have notified GE they will attend the picket line rally Saturday.

IUE-CWA Local 201 Chief Negotiator and Business Agent, Ric Casilli stated, "our resolutions to our grievances was for GE to bring back work for about 35 people to avoid layoffs, frankly this was an extremely reasonable request considering GE has shipped thousands of our jobs to places like Russia, China, Korea and Mexico including critical defense jobs." GE has indicated there may be as many as 100 lack of works at the Lynn Riverworks during the first 2 Quarters of next year and then in August has intentions to begin sending another 42 jobs to Romania.

Seven meetings with the Company over the last three weeks, produced little progress to resolve Local 201's grievances concerning farmed out work. On Tuesday, October 29th, the full 201 Grievance Board voted to strike the General Electric River Works plant beginning Thursday night at 11:00PM ending on Monday night at 11:00PM.

Local 201, the 3rd largest GE plant in the United States with approximately 2,550 GE members, also stands in full support of our brothers and sisters at the GE Erie Plant (largest U.S. plant) and GE Schenectady (4th largest plant) who have also issued strike notices over similar job issues.
