Operation: Over benefit Raises Money and Awareness
19 May 2006
Modified: 11:06:10 PM
On Friday, May 19, activists hosted a benefit show in Wellesley, MA for Operation: Over. Featuring music and a short presentation, the show helped raise people's awareness about the biolab that Boston University is attempting to build, despite widespread community resistance and the serious safety risks involved.

Though the school claims that its research at the proposed BioSafety Level 4 (BSL4) lab would not put the community at risk, the school has been sited for over 80 environmental violations at its level 3 lab over the last three years, not to mention an outbreak last year that the university attempted to cover up.

The show consisted of local high school bands and performers, playing music that ranged from Bob Dylan covers to rap music and punk music.
Dan H, Lyrical Messiah, Oh Shit They Caught Skaddam (OSTCS), Mike D, Aria Warp, and Condom Pocket all performed, and though they couldn't make it in person, Utterly Fantastic showed the music video of one of their songs.

Part way through the show, an Operation: Over participant gave a presentation about the B.U. biolab, giving a general outline of what it would be, and then explained about the various forms the resistance has taken. Accompanying the presentation was a short informational video made by an O:O highschool activist, giving more details about the biolab as well as footage of direct actions against it. The show was a benefit for O:O, and around $80 was raised. The money will help pay legal fees if necessary for an Operation: Over participant who was arrested while demonstrating against the biolab, and the leftover will go to the general fund for the organization.

This is part of Operation: Over's high school speaking tour. for more information on the group or their tour, visit www.operationover.freeyouth.net

It's nice to see one of these shows that isn't entirely punk or folk/punk music. Not to mention the fact that Lyrical Messiah had some awesome beats he made backing up his great lyrics.
