black voices for peace in Boston? (english)
27 Nov 2002
BVFP is doing great work in DC (see thingy below). Is there anything like that up here in beantown? re: "It is extremely important for those who are in a position to help develop a local response to this call in their city, to do so."
"Black Voices for Peace is calling for a Washington D.C. national event and local actions/commemorations on Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday, Monday-January 20, focusing on organizing for peace, racial and economic justice and civil rights and liberties. They ask groups around the nation to incorporate a focus on organizing against war and militarism into planned MLK events and to organize other events with this specific focus. In addition, on Sunday, January 19, BVFP calls for "Peace with Justice Sunday," and asks Black pastors and churches to lead an effort to incorporate this theme into Sunday services. The issues they want to address are: ending the sanctions and war against Iraq; ending US military and financial support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine; defending the Constitution; and promoting a national people's agenda of housing, health, etc. It is extremely important for those who are in a position to help develop a local response to this call in their city, to do so."
