Can I buy my son a gas mask?
22 May 2006
US troops have no protection from America’s poisonous uranium weapons in Iraq

From the SF Bayview.com: http://www.sfbayview.com/092204/gasmask092204.shtml

A soldier’s mom asks: “Can a gas mask shield against this (uranium) dust in Iraq, and can I provide my son with one is the question. ... I have been hearing a lot about this and it is terrifying.”

I get asked this question a lot. Parents of sons and daughters stationed in Iraq - or their wives, sisters, brothers, uncles and aunts and friends – want to help out Uncle Sam and their loved ones. They want to contribute to help buy the right gas mask to keep the soldier from breathing poisonous and radioactive uranium gas.

The truthful answer is “No, there is nothing you can buy. Your sons and daughters will have to take their chances in Iraq, just like everybody else. No amount of money will change the answer. What you want does not exist.”

This is the worst part of my work of writing about uranium munitions. Anybody who’s in Iraq and breathing is just as likely as the next person to get a whiff of poisonous uranium gas. Any dose at all is bad.

The higher the dose, the worse it is. Detached, dry, clinical, declassified Army memos written in 1943 talk about death occurring in three days from a heavy dose. It is like going into battle with your own side using an invisible, odorless, tasteless poison gas against both the enemy and you.

That, in fact, is exactly what the U.S. military is doing. It’s called uranium oxide gas, vapor and aerosols. That’s right. That date, 1943, is no typo. The U.S. military has known how poisonous this gas is for 61 years.

Welcome to the big city where all the Pentagon suits lie about uranium oxide! I don’t expect them to stop now. This practice of using uranium oxide is flat out wrong and they all, from President Bush on down, richly deserve a long term in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary.

Every soldier who is inIraq already hasa protective mask. I don't think they would want to wear it 24/7, though.

Every soldier in Iraq already has a mask, bullshit! We all found out during the invasion that only 40% of the soldiers were supplied with maskes in the event of a chemical weapon explosion(which is how most on the left knew that we knew that saddam had no WMD's BTW). You are blinded by your militarist ideology and your epestemic nationalism, you might want to search out a little info before you post next time.

Brad,
Although your post is extremely harsh and vitriolic, I will refrain from responding in kind. Those who know me in person are probably laughing their asses off at your post. I, however, will give you the benefit of the doubt and will forgive your ignorance.
You see, I was in Iraq. I rolled over the border in March of 2003 as part of the invasion force. Just about everything that I say about Iraq is based in firsthand knowledge about how the Army works (or doesn't work) and in what I saw with my own fucking eyes. Is that enough searching out of info for you?
The liberal media has a vested interest in lying to people about the situation in Iraq, even more so than the shmucks at FOX. The "fact" that only 40% of the soldiers were supplied with masks is an outright lie. In order to be deployed to a combat zone, a soldier must have been issued certain pieces of equipment, one of which is the M40 protective mask ("gas mask" in civilian terminoloy) or some variation thereof.
In order to properly protect against depleted uranium dust, the mask would have to be worn (and properly sealed) 24 hours a day. This, of course, is a sheer impossibility on the basis of the fact that one cannot eat while wearing said mask. In addition, wearing the mask for longer than 20-30 minutes, particularly in the hot desert sun, is extremely uncomfortable.
As for the accusations of militarism and nationalism, I would recommend not being so hasty with making assumptions.

Brad,
Your posting is wrong. Every soldier heading overseas is issued a mask. Even when there is no threat of any NBC the mask is still carried. It is part of the uniform! Please check your "facts" prior to posting next time.
