to add to the fuel... (english)
16 Dec 2002
i must admit, i only read through half the submissions [short attention span...i blame society...har!]. anyway, as someone briefly pointed out, the target audience is NOT 18 and over, and A&F know this fact full well. Yes, I am a sincere advocate against sweatshops, but one mustn't ignore our society while trying to help others. In addition to many other influences, pre-teen and teenage girls are being bombarded with images and morals that all point them toward growing up faster and advocate [no matter how indirectly] sexual experiences. Britany Speares, [not counting my opinion of her musical "talent"] is an idiot for claiming that she just wishes to express herself and she doesn't care what anyone thinks - she's a bloody role model for hundreds of thousands of girls! This, added to the fact that parents are less involved in their children's rearing, in addition to the fact that the growth hormones in cow's affect girls [specifically] and bring puberty at a younger age, combined with the images from an A&F magazine, the music industry, and television stations which make comedies out of teen pregnancies create an overwhelming bombardment for young girls. They not only are physically maturing, but many believe, based on societal standards, that they should be sexually active [in whatever form] as well. This not only leads to a higher risk of teen parents but also leaves this seemingly mature dressed pre-teens in the dreams of sick perverts - they are still naive and can easily be taken advantage of, and many men know this. Anyway - I'm just personally more concerned with the societal implications and consequences of the magazine more than anything - it's not the only problem but it sure doesn't help.
