Subject: Letter of LAS MADRES to the Pope
Buenos Aires, December 30, 2002
To His Holiness John Paul II¬
¬ ¬ ¬ We listened carefully your last Christmas Message, in which Your Holiness
asked that the war the United States has declared to Iraq be stopped. Even
though you are fragile, and your voice is very soft, we know from personal
experience the great value that statements of The Vatican have.¬ We are sure
that with precise, unambiguous instructions, from Your Holiness to the
Bishops of Argentina, the genocide committed in our country would have not
happened.¬ The complicity of the Argentinean Church with the murderers was
repugnant, in spite of the fact that some priests - 125 - were killed for
being with the people.¬ Two (2) bishops‚Äď Angelelli and Ponce de Le√≥n-followed
the same fate.¬ Yet, the voice of The Vatican was never heard.
¬ ¬ ¬ This is why in this moment, when some countries are required - above all,
Iraq-, to allow reviews of their deposits of nuclear weapons, the same is not
done with the United States. Bush is taking control of the world; he behaves
like a terrorist: invades and blockades countries, he bombs nations, kills
millions of children with his bombs and with his nuclear waste.
Your Holiness John Paul II, if it is true that you want to prevent the
war, as all of us want to stop this genocide, The Association of Mothers of
The Plaza de Mayo, (La Asociación Madres de La Plaza de Mayo), ask that you
also raise your voice and denounce de massacres the U.S.A. has committed,
commits and wants to continue committing; visit Iraq, visit the places where
millions of women and children die (we saw those places, we visited them.)¬
Our children taught us to place our bodies on the line, as Jesus Christ did.¬
You are feeble, your voice is very quiet, your body is tired, but we beg you
one and a thousand times to use the strength of The Vatican to stop the war,
to stop the arm of the assassin, Bush.
The wars cannot endure the silence of The Vatican; the Church has
committed or has permitted many genocides to happen, and we will not accept
one more.
The Church always talks of heaven, that Jesus is with the poor and
oppressed, that Jesus is with those who suffer.¬ But we the poor and
unprotected are sick and tired of so much suffering.¬
NO to the war against Iraq.¬ ¬ Let us stop this new crime that we are sure
Jesus does not want.
Holy Father, we need a stronger demand, even if your voice is soft and
quiet; we need a more solidarian demand, from your tired body; a cry of¬ "No
to war!" even if it becomes your last cry.

NOW THE ORIGINAL IN SPANISH:
¬
Buenos Aires, 30 de Diciembre de 2002
¬ A Su Santidad, Juan Pablo II¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬
¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬
No a la guerra contra Irak. Paremos este nuevo crimen que seguramente
Jes√ļs no desea.¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬
Hebe de Bonafini
Presidenta
