Police Unfairly Target Chinese Prostitutes
27 May 2006
This article -- about a recent police bust on Chinese prostitutes --
was on the front page of the Somerville Journal and is SICK.

First of all,

1) While the frontpage headline opportunistically screams "Illegal
immigrants ran brothel," there is nothing in the article that verifies
the immigrants were actually undocumented -- rather, they are being
detained by ICE (formerly INS) because they are *not citizens* (and
now have criminal charges).

2) The police found out about the prostitution joint from reading an
ad in the Phoenix! Which if you know, includes ads for a million
"escort" services (for men; the Phoenix is pretty gross to consider
itself a leftwing publication if you ask me). They probably picked
this place to enforce the law at because it involves Chinese people
and because BUSTING IMMIGRANTS LOOKS GOOD.

Especially this month, there have been myriad news reports about
immigrant roundups.

3) And thirdly, the police used their typical tactic of going
undercover and "soliciting" services first -- and I have an idea what
that means -- before turning around and making the arrrests later!
(PIGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Is there anything we can do about this? There is a Somerville 5
Committee, but what about incidents like this? I feel like at least
this situation should be explored. Carol, is trafficking illegal in
Massachusetts? And can we approach this from a feminist, as well as
immigrant rights, standpoint?

argh. I'm a little pissed.

I too am outraged. Prostitutes are often exploited employees (to use a nice word). As a supporter of the American free enterprise system, I want the police to get the goons and pimps out, and let the ladies compete for business on the basis of quality, regardless of ethnic background, sexual preference, or geographic location.

Objective criteria should be the only bases for how mcuh business these potential business owners can generate.

Needless to say, these critria are defined by the market. But dream on. This is another instance of what happens in the Socialist Collective of Massachusetts.
Great Article

The author of this article raisies some intersting ideas. Even the comments, although lacking in considerate prior reflection, help me think about this issue.
I'm not really sure what to do about it though.

You might want to try and send the information to the Boston Anarchist Black Cross. They do legal support/community defense. abc-boston (at) lists.riseup.net

ABC Fucking Rocks. In a world where only the rich get 'justice,' ABC is actually taking intelligent action.

The girls are here for the community? I assume they were. We just don't want them to get into trouble. Actually we don't want to get into trouble either. But thanks for the contact info.
