Feb 14 Noon Demo at Federal Building Boston - quick notes (english)
14 Mar 2003
Modified: 21 Mar 2003
Seemed like maybe 250 people. CD component with about 15 or 20 people blocking most of the front entrance to building. Not enough to totally block building. One arrest -- Cathy Hoffman, one of the demo organizers.
Demo ended promptly at 1pm. Police waited out the blockers, none arrested
Seemed like maybe 250-300 people. Good energy, cold weather, lots of police. Spirited rally with many speakers. CD component with maybe 15-20 people blocking most of the front entrance to building. Side entrance open, front almost blocked, with a narrow passage behind the police line. Cathy Hoffman, one of the demo organizers, was the one person arrested.
Seemed like a negotiated end to the demonstration promptly at 1. (Rumored that police threatened to hold blockers all weekend in distant location if arrested.)

I was distracted by events, and didn't catch most of the speakers. Happened to notice Felix Arroyo, whose short speech I thought was great.

There were some local TV cameras; 7, maybe 38, maybe others; but crappy coverage or no coverage on evening news, from what I've heard (didn't see anything from my haphazard channel-surfing). However, our corporate airwaves were well supplied with military and patriotic story lines.

Incidentally, Boston Indy seems to need support and ideas - I think. Not many folks posting articles, and dozens of bad/fake articles from right wing and/or insincere sources. Maybe INdy should add a moderated thread in the center column, and folks who don't like the edit can go wade through the slushpile.

Posting this at 10PM, the latest bostonindy article I see is from 6PM.
So Boston INdy might actually have some other articles on the noon demo but delayed in the pipeline.

Cathy's Free (english)
15 Mar 2003
In case people were worried, I heard that Cathy was out already, so no problems there. The police DID threaten to hold us until Monday in "E" District, I think, wherever the hell that is. But other than that they were actually pretty civil, no heckling or pushing.
