FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 2006
Resisting the "Green Scare"

December 7, 2005, marked the beginning of the largest roundup of environmental and animal rights activists in U.S. history. There have now been nearly 20 arrests and many Grand Jury subpoenas.

The nation-wide sweep of arrests, dubbed "Operation Backfire," has been described by the FBI as a major hit to environmentalists and animal rights activists who engage in destruction of property as a means to defend wild lands and lives of animals. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales stated in January that, "Investigating and preventing animal rights and environmental extremism is one of the FBI's highest domestic priorities".

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-New Jersey) said. "The Oklahoma City bombing killed 168 people. The attacks of 9/11 killed 3,000. Since 1993, there have been at least five fatal attacks on doctors who performed legal abortions. Eric Rudolph recently pleaded guilty to placing a bomb in a public area during the Olympic Games in 1996, as well as bombing a Birmingham women's clinic and a gay nightclub. All of these cases involved the loss of human life. To date, not a single incident of so-called environmental terrorism has killed anyone."

Despite the lack of human injury in any of these actions, the government is threatening extraordinary sentences, ranging from 30 years to life plus 335 years. Similar crimes committed without political motivation receive far shorter sentences and even different charges. For example, a string of nine recent church arsons are being described by the authorities as "youthful pranks".

Environmental activist Jeff "Free" Luers received a disproportionately long sentence (22.8 years) after confessing to attempting to burn three SUVs at a Romania dealership in Eugene, OR. At trial, Jeff clearly stated that his action was a desperate attempt to bring awareness to the destruction of the Earth by this unsustainable form of transportation and its external costs of global warming, pollution, and war for oil. Because of his stated political beliefs, "Free" received an extremely long prison
sentence; he is charged with a Measure 11 crime despite the fact that this fire did not endanger any life; and he continues to suffer harassment by the Department of Corrections due to his designation as a member of a Security Threat Group'.

June 2006 marks the sixth year that "Free" has been in prison as well as the 3rd year of International Days of Solidarity with him. The focus of international events this year will be on "Operation Backfire" and what many are calling a "Green Scare" campaign of government repression.

Call for Weekend of Resistance Against the "Green Scare" June 9 - 11, 2006

by Jeff Free Luers

This June marks my 6th year in prison. From behind these walls I have strived to remain an active part of this struggle; from contributing to the dialogue and discussion of tactics, to furthering the debate on climate change in the public. Perhaps most importantly I am proof that prison cannot crush the spirit of resistance.

This year has seen an increase in state repression against activists and radicals alike. It is truly a scary time. We all know about the "Red Scare" - the government's attempt to justify repression by labeling dissidents "communists" back in the 1950's. Today we see their "Green Scare" attempt to crush resistance by labeling them "eco-terrorists."

For the last three years, June 11th has been celebrated as an international day of solidarity with me, Jeffrey Luers. I have been overjoyed with a sense of love & pride at the support I have received from around the world. My deepest and sincerest thanks go out to all of you.

Right now there are more than a dozen people sitting in American jails (or on strict bail release) accused of Earth/Animal Liberation Front actions. Six people were originally arrested. These arrests were based almost entirely on the testimony of one police informant, Jacob Ferguson. Bill Rodgers - accused of multiple arsons - took his own life in a jail cell. Unfortunately, several of those arrested are now cooperating with the state.

These defendants are facing ridiculous charges and a draconian amount of time.

This June, I ask you to show them the solidarity that you have shown me. I ask that foremost in your mind be the thought that the state is trying to break this struggle with repressive and intimidating arrests and sentences. I hope you understand that it's not just those of us in prison being punished with these sentences; they are designed to be examples to you, to frighten you into compliance. This June I'm asking you to demonstrate that you can't be intimidated. Celebrate your dissent, give it voice. Be loud. Be visible. If you have the ability, organize a reclaim the streets party or a critical mass.

If you are going to host a fundraiser or venue event, I ask that you donate all proceeds to the legal defense of those recently arrested who maintain integrity in the face of repression, whether they are innocent or guilty.

This June, show the world that the voice of truth will not be silenced by fear.

A child molester gets less time! Second degree murder gets less time. Over 100 deaths in the nightclub fire in Rhode Island. And the band manager, who set off the pyrotechnics got less time!
Moral of this story? Don't mess with Corporations?
Something is wrong here!
Re: 30 events planned in resistance to the green scare
02 Jun 2006
When activists for any cause - whether political, social, environmental, or whatever - resort to violence, this smears the hard work of all the people and organizations who are working to make this world a better place. This only makes our jobs all the harder and risks turning the public against us. Violence only begets more violence and has never solved anything. Although the law-making "establishments" are always working to erect new legal road-blocks and restrictions to our ability to speak out, making activism more difficult to conduct and coming ever closer to trampling over the Constitution by restricting access and free-speech, we must nonetheless hold ourselve above them and show to be their ethical superiors. Activists who engage in violence are not interested in positive change for all so much as they are interested in grabbing a moment of attention for themselves regardless of the possible wider consequences of their actions. When anyone crosses that line and starts acting worse than their advesary - they deserve to be punished.

If you dont like certain actions or laws, you have the right to challenge them, but you do not have the right to break them ... especially if there is any chance doing so might cause harm to another person, animal, or the earth.

PS - Burning cars is just stupid and pointless, they're easily replaceable.
Re: Allen
02 Jun 2006
Yes, violence doesn't accomplish anything. That's exactly why N30 DIDN'T breathe new life into the antiglobalization movement, why the Makhnoist resistance in the Ukraine DIDN'T defeat the White Army and set up a sustainable anarchist society before the Red Army's intervention, why the Zapatistas AREN'T held in high regard all over the world...I can go on and on, but the fact of the matter remains that pacifism doesn't do much. In the words of Malcolm X, "You don't have a peaceful revolution. You don't have a turn-the-other-cheek revolution. There's no such thing as a nonviolent revolution. Revolution is bloody. Revolution is hostile. Revolution knows no compromise. Revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way." Perhaps it's the "peaceful" activists like YOU who destroy everything that real activists are building. The only people who are really alienated by most of the so-called "violent" tactics that you condemn are the reactionaries who are so invested in the establishment. Best of luck trying to kill a beast one inch at a time.
Re: 30 events planned in resistance to the green scare
02 Jun 2006
revolution isn't a one-trick pony-- there's too much at stake and too many people with varying degrees of ability to commit, family responsibilities, political risk, etc- all of whom could be potential allies- for us to insist that any one form of resistance is the only valid one. insisting on one strategy while dismissing all others only serves to weaken and divide us and strengthen the hand of the enemy. all of us will have to build a new world together and make it work if we are to survive. so let's start acting like we believe that and in each other. i don't tolerate betrayals in political organizing, but also i cannot tolerate egotism or machismo or sectarianism. isn't our movement big and strong enough to accomodate this range of sincere commitment to revolution, and still be effective? let's learn from the zapatistas- their movement includes a huge range of (principled) political and tactical diversity, and people with widely varied roles in society from grandmas to gunslingers (or gunslinging grannies)- that's why they are so strong. abajo y a la izquierda esta el corazon (below and to the left lies the heart) works for me just fine.
Re: 30 events planned in resistance to the green scare
02 Jun 2006
But I think the current events around the current FBI investigations is that people who didn't participate in property destruction are under surveillance and government harassment.

I just want to point out that we can have a tactical discussion about a lot of things, and I think any revolutionary activity or though is well-served by vigorous debate about tactics and philosophy. However, these current situations are not cut and dry. There are a lot of innocent people being fucked with in a major way. People have families, jobs, and lives that are being torn apart by government intrusion and blame.

And, as someone pointed out, even if somebody does admit to arson, is it really fair that they serve life sentences when human lives weren't at stake? Even if you were to agree that the crime is heinous, is it more heinous than rape or homocide? This is a really tragic situation.

I know it might be easy to look at the indictment and draw your own conclusion that "well if they did the crime, then they'll have to pay the time," but it's important to understand that none of us certainly know what really happened, and it seems that the defendant's innocence is an high possibility. Thanks.

I am glad to find out it's OK to burn things if you don't actually know if someone's in or near the building or thing you are burning.

If it's for a Good Cause, then it's OK. Hey that's what that "murderer" bush says about Iraq and what Big Boy Sharon used to say to his murdering thieving zionist collaborators!
Re: 30 events planned in resistance to the green scare
03 Jun 2006
I don't think that most ELF actions are productive--I actually think that they produce far more backlash than they advance the movement. They also do run major risks, though I appreciate the fact that no one has ever been harmed in one, and that from what I hear, they always take great effort to keep it that way.

But I also am disgusted by Free's incredibly long sentence, and by the amount of energy being focused on ELF/ALF by law enforcement and politicians. It's a clear demonstration of the importance places on corporate property. I'm not saying that I wouldn't expect law enforcement not to enforce the law--that's their social function, like it or not--but it's absurd to give ELF/ALF more attention than abortion-provider murderers or militia/anti-immigrant hate groups.

And it's crucial to remember that mainstream animal-rights and environmental groups are getting targetted. Follow the link below for a CNN article in which a Senator alleges PETA ties to ALF/ELF. (I don't like PETA, as I think that they're self-righteous and ridiculously single-issue, but the allegations are silly. When I worked for a perfectly legal environmental campaign about 5 years ago, the level of police surveillance was quite high, including a police comment that indicated that police had heard a phone conversation about where to meet for a small rally. I have to wonder if that was because there were assumptions that an anti-corporate environmental campaign would be linked to ELF (and trust me--we weren't).

The point of this rambling comment? Whatever you think of the alleged actions of those who've been arrested recently, as well as those in prison like Free, you should be concerned about the Green Scare.

CNN article mentioned earlier: http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/05/18/domestic.terrorism/
ECO - ARSONIST PLAY WITH FIRE
04 Jun 2006
The idea that “political arson” is a good tactic as long as no one gets killed is not reasonable.

While the arsonists who burned churches in the South, and the Eco-arsonists both claim that they set lots of fires without a single fatality this can hardly be defended as a kind of “propaganda of the deed.” Arsonists are fundamentally antisocial.

True die-hard ecology believers ultimately think that there are too many humans on Earth. Everything on Earth is 'natural' except humans, in their world view. Radical Ecologists think that the population should be reduced drastically and small groups of humans live in Feudal impoverishment scattered across the "Pristine" landscape. Almost every article on ecology must use the word 'pristine' or 'fragile.' The first Ecology Day in 1970 was heavily promoted in the Media/Press as a way to divert youth and other radicals away from Anti-War demonstrations and Anti-Imperialism into the harmless neutral nuttiness of tree hugging and animal loving. Don't get sucked into this anti-human way of thinking.

The vast nuclear arsenal in the hands of U.S. imperialism poses a far greater danger to humanity than does leakage from nuclear power plants. Under capitalist rule, the fundamental irrationality of profit and market relations can render unsafe even the best understood technology. Even the present technology is more than adequate to provide food and shelter for everyone. Yet, as famine plagues many countries, the U.S. government is still paying farmers here not to grow food

At bottom, eco-radicalism is “capitalist” ideology. It shares the same basic premise as other expressions of capitalist ideology: that the capitalist system has developed the highest level of scientific knowledge and technical application possible in the present period and in the foreseeable future

Eco-Activists are anti-Technology, and anti-Workingclass. I don’t know the particulars of the listed “activists” cases, but they are not fighting for workingclass interests. At best they are a diversion from what is important, at worst they are champions of a reactionary ideology that looks to the benighted past of humanity.

To look at the capitalists' unbounded squandering of natural resources and degradation of the environment in the interests of profit, one could easily conclude—as most ecologists do—that advanced industrial technology is inherently destructive of nature. This reflects a static, ahistorical view of both human society and scientific progress. Developing and using industrial technology to deal with pollution or the recycling of raw materials in limited supply is not necessarily an insurmountable problem.

In contrast, "eco-socialist" Sarkar dismisses "all illusions as to the revolutionary or leading role of the proletariat" because workers are "addicted to consumerism." He advocates a reversion to pre-industrial, "labour-intensive technologies" which "would be preferred, not only to provide jobs, but also because such technologies reduce resource consumption and, consequently, have less negative environmental impact."

This is a reactionary utopia in which the mass of humanity would work longer and harder while consuming less. Sarkar himself describes it as "similar to an ever-worsening recession" and "a great crisis without end."

Most Green activists do not subscribe to Sarkar's uncompromising primitivism, preferring to focus on eco-reformism within the framework of the existing capitalist order. The policies they advocate to "protect" the environment and "conserve" energy usually would result in lowering the living standards of the working class and poor

In their denigration of the proletariat and their promotion of schemes to ‘save the environment' under the existing capitalist system, the eco-radicals help perpetuate this system in which science and technology are often used in ways destructive to humanity.

Environmentalists commonly point to the former Soviet Union to argue that socialist planning is just as destructive of the environment as capitalism. However, the ecological disasters which occurred in the USSR, as well as those being created in China today, resulted from the mismanagement of the collectivized economy by the Stalinist bureaucracy. A Soviet government based on workers democracy, representing the interests of the working people, would have sought to prevent the pollution of the Caspian Sea and the destruction of the Aral Sea, as it would resist the mounting pollution today of China's rivers and urban atmosphere.

And we can read the rest in Worker's Vanguard, right Liam? Or is it the Militant?
POLITICAL "FIRESTARTERS" TARGET SCIENCE
04 Jun 2006
Most decent people think "arsonists" of any kind should be locked up. Some "Activists" think it's a political act to bomb places as long as they phone in some kind of warning to give victims a chance to get out. Some Animal "Rights" activists in England recently dug up a corpse and held it hostage because they thought someone was violating the "Animal Bill of Rights." I hope as many people as possible read about these kinds of activities. Progressives, activists, unionized workers, just plain decent people are revolted by this pathetic "movement," that cares more about fantasy animal friends that human beings.

Watch "Spongebob Square Pants" and then go down to a hardware store and buy natural sponges and set them free if you like, but just don't set the place on fire....and expect sympathy from the general public.
Re: 30 events planned in resistance to the green scare
04 Jun 2006
Liam, I'm not sure if you're responding to me, as your comment above is a bit of a non-sequitur. But if you are, I think that my earlier comment shoujld make it clear that I have no sympathy for the kinds of things you describe. It's silly for you even to insinuate it.

I was commenting on your incredibly broad and sectarian dismissal of all environmentalists with comments like, "Eco-Activists are anti-Technology, and anti-Workingclass." This is certainly true of some--I've met and argued with a few. Your comments simply dismiss working-class environmentalists and ignore both the theory and the activism around linkingcapitalism's destruction of nature with its exploitation of workers. That's ignorant, and it readsout of something from a highly dogmatic Trotskyist rag.

So I'll ask again--Worker's Vanguard? Maybe the Militant? I think that Socialist Worker is more advanced, so I wont' suggest that one, much as the ISO annoys me.
Re: Liam
04 Jun 2006
This is a really great strategy, Liam. Snipe them, make sweeping generalizations, and then conclude that the only way is to join up a "real" workingclass movement. Personally, I think you're just pissed because most (if not all) of these "terrorists" are anarchists, and not vanguardist, authoritarian, power-hungry commies bent on world domination.
