Repost2with fix: Boston Police Department Special Operations "Fan Club" (Update) (english)
31 Mar 2003
Modified: 01 Apr 2003
Sorry, I needed to fix the links: We've updated our page on the Boston Police Department Special Operations. We're posting a static copy of the page here. Our own copy will be further enhanced as we process more photos. No doubt there will be COINTELPRO assholes responding to this. Too bad. We're here and we're here to stay.

The Halo Effect

While
photographing the blackshirts, another photographer commented that the
threads used to embroider markings and text on their uniforms was
reflective and would be distorted in photos.  I found this to be an
interesting comment since the thread appeared to be black to the
eye.  In fact, we could not read the text on the uniforms.  It
was impossible to see badge numbers.  My digital photos were a
surprise to me.  Through the camera's "eye" the
embroidery appears silver - not black.  It does seem to be
reflective.  Look at the two halos in the above photos.  These
were not visible to the eye, only the camera picked them up.  I did
not use a flash to take pictures.  The halo around the head of the
blackshirt to the right is centered around the text on his hat reading
"SPECIAL OPERATIONS".  I don't know what the halo at the
tip of the knee of the officer on the right was caused by.
However, consider this: the naked eye has a great deal of trouble
reading the embroidered text on these uniforms.  Photography seems
to reveal more detail, but the thread used appears to be designed to
distort photographs.  Even when we can read the text on
"badges," the badge numbers cannot be read clearly.  Is
this an attempt to render these blackshirts anonymous?  Why do they
need to be anonymous?  If a blackshirt abused a citizen, by what
means could the citizen identify the blackshirt?  Thus, we have
created this "fan club" to help Bostonians identify, at least
by face, these blackshirts.

Badges

As
you can see in the above, even when photographed, we cannot make out the
badge numbers.  Even when the "SPECIAL OPERATIONS" and
"BOSTON POLICE" labels can be read, the badge numbers cannot
be read.  We will add more badge photos soon.
