Boston cops harass kids (english)
05 Apr 2003

Cops in Jamaica Plain harass kids hanging out and arrest one for asking for a badge number.
I was walking around at 9:40 PM on April 5, 2003, and as I got to the intersection of South St. and Center St. in Jamaica Plain, I saw a young person being laid over a police car. The cop was arresting him and being aggresive in his tone of voice and body motions. It made me very nervous.

I went over to a group of young people on the other side of the street and I asked what's going on, and they said "Something's going down, it's okay." I asked again and said "That's fucked up, he's harassing him," one kid said "That's my brother, they're arresting him."

I said I wish I had his badge number because he was being brutal to the kid. I wanted to make a complaint.

The kid said that's what his brother was doing -- asking for the cops badge number -- when the cop decided to arrest him. "Fucking pigs. They're not here to protect us. When I needed them they didn't come for two hours. And they always harass us for hangin out. But we stay out here. We hold down this corner."

A cop came to the group of kids still standing there, and I was about 10 feet away. He started yelling at them for standing there. He yelled at a young girl about 13 or 14 years old. "I'm waiting for my mom," she said. "No, you're not," he said. "Yeah, she's sposed to pick me up right here," she said.

Then he turned to the boy next to her, about 16 to 18 years old, and said "What about you? You're not waiting for her mom, get outta here!" He said it with an intimidating and angry tone.

Then he looked at me but I guess he decided I was too old or too white to be with those kids. He glared at me for a moment and walked away.

This is the sort of stuff that goes on in our neighborhoods. Who do the cops work for? Why do we allow this?

You know, listening to progressive people, you might get the idea that there are two kinds of people in the world, good and bad. How would you come down on this thread?

Cop: arrest; due process; accountability, at worse harrassment.

Indymedia poster: war mongering; violence; kill kill kill.

Next thing you know, France will accuse US of being arrogant.

"Cop: arrest; due process; accountability, at worse harrassment"

No, the fucking point of this story is to illustrate one more incident among millions in which police "accountability" and "due process" are myths and fabrications...

Sometimes U.S. jurisprudence works, but in many ways it does not.

People wrongly convicted on fabricated evidence, serving 15 years of life sentences until proven innocent, and no penalties levied on the cops and prosecutors responsible... (I am speaking of the Rossetti case)...

Torture in police "interrogation" procedures...

There's fucked up shit going on.

My point is not to demonize "all cops" but to point out that something is hugely rotten and needs to change. Does that make me a stupid progressive or does it make me an astute citizen with a heart? And if it's the latter then what does it make you?
