ANSWER/Redbaiting Statement of the NLG (english)

ANSWER/Redbaiting Statement of the NLG
ANSWER/Redbaiting Statement of the NLG

WHEREAS the ANSWER coalition has been subjected by some critics to unprincipled attacks based on what others perceive to be the political philosophy of some of its members; and

WHEREAS we are entering a dangerous period in our history in which reactionary and establishment political forces will attempt to isolate and fragment the progressive movement; and

WHEREAS the National Lawyers Guild has a proud history of working with progressive political groups and individuals representing a wide variety of political philosophies; and

WHEREAS the ANSWER coalition has been actively involved in mobilizing a mass movement against war and racism;

That the NLG opposes red-baiting and similar tactics of ideologically motivated negative labeling of sectors of the progressive movement; and

That the NLG categorically rejects calls to "purge" the movement of progressive people who hold certain beliefs or who are members of particular parties, and recognizes such demands and divisive attacks as a real threat to an effective anti-war movement; and

That the NLG will not participate in witchhunts and opposes in the strongest possible terms calls for Congressional investigations of political organizations, and stands ready to assist all who resist this new McCarthyism; and

That the NLG insists that such disagreements about politics and strategy as may from time to time exist among groups in the progressive movement must be aired and resolved in an atmosphere of mutual respect and on a principled basis, with the goal of building a broad-based movement.

you talk about "red baiting" then sign in as commie lawyer..
well at least within the later you don't speak with forked

ANSWER IS communist financed with a private agenda. Why don't they just come out and say it the way it is? Stead,
they organize "peace mvements" but their intention is the
over throw of the US and installation of a dictatorship
( like one of their hero's and NLG's ) North Korea, China
or Russia. Do you feel all americans eat dumb crackers
for breakfast, lunch and dinner? And arn't you "baiting"
with the McCarthyism Bullshit?

Come on now counselor, arn't you?

Some one who knows all about the Lawyers Guild.

had his dumb cracker for the day. that must be the explanation to his sick ramblings. ANSWER has done a great job in getting large numbers of people out on the street protesting war regardless of politics. The same thing can't be said for its phony critics.

The pro-war bunch is made up of many powerful and evil groups who must love seeing antiwar arguments among antiwar folks. We need unity, not nit-picking dissent.

At the same time... (english)

At the same time... It is true that progressive movements have come under even more intense pressure under this Administration, but it is also true that there is friction between the various movements.

Regardless of their political philosophy, ANSWER has demonstrated a "political protest" policy that is disrespectful to other organizations (and their progressive efforts) and has caused much of the friction by their actions and not their philosophy. The tactics that ANSWER has used is confusing to those of us who are unaffiliated with specific groups, but who participate in rallies and protests.

Why does the local ANSWER push their way to the front of the crowd, with their signage and rhetoric, and squeeze out the official sponsors of rallies and protests? Why does ANSWER bring their sound truck to events that they did not organize, creating a noise that is louder than the official speakers, and without giving credit or contributing to the group that did organize the crowd? Why does ANSWER appear to be trying to take credit for events that they didn't organize, sponsor or financially support? Why have I overheard people (at several Boston rallies during the past few months) asking "who is *that* group", "what are *they* doing here", and "why can't ANSWER shut up, or stay at their own damned rallies?".

These questions are not nit-picky, phoney criticism, they are legitimate questions that might help counter-act some perceived negative aspects of the ANSWER Organization's techniques. If unaffiliated folks are confused, or annoyed by their tactics, then something is wrong. ANSWER isn't being perceived as a progressive movement, it has created an image as group that is disrespectful of, and ultimately detrimental to, the progressive movement. These techniques are hurting itself more than helping, and causing much of the problem.
