Roxbury Organizers Continue to Fight Biolab
11 Jun 2006
Despite the recent ground-breaking of Boston University's BioSafety Level 4 laboratory, Roxbury organizers are still trying to stop its construction. The lab, which would test deadly pathogens such as anthrax and ebola, purportedly using scores of animals in the process, would be located next to the Roxbury neighborhood, putting Roxbury residents at grave risk in the case of a leak.

On Monday, June 5th, the Boston City Council held a hearing about the city's emergency preparedness plan, including evacuation plans in the case of a leak from Boston University's new biolab. Klare Allen and others from the Roxbury-based group Safety Net share their reactions to the evacuation plan and talk about the current state of the campaign to stop the lab.

Actually, people in poor communities constantly and consistently protest the presence of drugs, drug houses, and the violence and destruction associated with them (including the oppressive rather than protective police presence) in their neighborhoods. Quite frankly, meth may be a real killer, but there are many things that are killing out nation's poor and and the greatest opponents (the official, the corporate) are the real reasons drugs and poverty are killing black, brown and poor peoples, and it is important for everyone in society to stand against the many manifestations of structural racism, classism, and oppression... which definitely includes the bio lab.
If the bio lab never has an accident and never kills a single person in Roxbury, it will still have done immeasurable damage, because of what it represents and what it means in this society...
Don't narrow your vision to see only the community killers that the media and government want you to see (drung, gangs, etc). Open your eyes and see the whole picture, the real history, and protest it all. And DON'T presume that people living in communities that aren't protected (by money and high walls) from drugs, violence and poverty aren't fighting for their communties. Such a point of view is patronizing and offensive.
Thanks to everyone working against the bio lab.
Keep up the good work.

The problem, David, is that all social movements are inevitably infiltrated by people who actually WANT to make poeple hat enad fear the police. A lot of people then play along because it's "cool" to oppose the police, never mind that a lot of police officers are genuinely good people. A brilliant strategy because of course good people don't like being hated by the people they are supposed to be serving. Is it the case that there are institutional problems inherent in any organization including the police force? Of course. Is the answer to weed out all the good people from what they must come to see as a thankless job, and leave in place all the crooked people who just like having the power to beat people up? This is a terrible strategy but unfrotunately the one that seems to succeed most often, when you get a bunch of pseudo-activists with their own globalist agenda going out and making AMericans hate each other. I have been around tehse people long enough to know that there are those who while preaching the cause of struggling for the working class have their own little gigs on the side, usually involving their own self-aggrandizement, promotion of each others' musical groups in hopes of landing a label and selling out, etc. They always smile and pretend to be friendly to everyone who plays along with their little act, and then they go around thwarting every effort at unifying anything but their pre-selected groups who are then set up for fruitless confrontations with each other. These are the agents of the strategy of divide and conquer. They could care less about the people they purport to be struggling with--they are in this for their own self-ineterest and to advance the cause of their puppet masters who are in fact the very enemy they claim to be fighting. They are social saboteurs and should be called out as such. By their fruits you shall know them, and the failure thus far of every social movement, be it antiwar, anti biolab, or anything else is evidence of the existence of this sick little cadre of young and old traitors to truth, justice, and harmony. And their days are numbered, the truth will out and every effort at denying what they've been up to will fail, since they stick out like sore thumbs among legitimately concerned citizens who do not play their little games. You all know who you are, and so do we. Keep smiling, keep pretending--you'll be out of business very soon.
