YEAR: 2002
DIR/PROD: Jamie Johnson
TIME: 75 minutes
SOURCE: jamiejohnson (at)
TEXT: In struggling to understand what it means to come into an enormous fortune as one of the heirs of the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical empire, 20-year-old director Jaime Johnson picks up his camera to talk to ten of his friends and gives us this remarkable personal documentary about one of the smallest and least-likely-to- agree-to-be-interviewed minorities on the planet: children of the vastly rich. Born Rich offers unprecedented access to the lives of kids who have names synonymous with wealth—Bloomberg, Newhouse, Whitney, Hornblower, Trump -- and allows them to discuss the one subject everybody in the world knows it's not polite to talk about in public: money. Few are involved in their family businesses. Through intimate interviews and vérité footage, Johnson's camera captures truths that forge an honest and revealing portrait of this small and protected group of people as they talk candidly about an upbringing made more complicated by people's conflicting ideas about wealth, their relationship to their inheritance, their plans for their fortunes, and their pervading anxiety over being "cut off." Fascinating and groundbreaking, Born Rich is ultimately a raw and warmhearted rumination on the responsibility of possessing vast resources which effectively demystifies the notion that wealth brings knowledge and the capability to accomplish anything. Johnson isn’t successful in getting his father to open up, he stops early before any penetrating questions are ever asked, and the director isn’t successful in telling a coherent story. But the audience does get an illuminating, at times too honest, glimpse at the thoughts of college aged kids who will inherit great wealth through the luck of their births. Included in the footage are interviews with S.I. Newhouse IV (fencer and student), Ivanka Trump (Penn student), Georgina Bloomberg (equestrian), Cody Franchetti, Josiah Hornblower, and Luke Weil. Weil is the most outrageous and makes for good film viewing, while Hornblower is the most earnest and sympathetic, although he seems to be medicated.

Wunderbar (english)
01 Sep 2003

50 million would be enough, don't you think?

that should give you enough cash to live
in luxury for the rest of your life.

Maybe we could have a fund that would help
FORMER RICH people, with, say, 5 million
to get through old age in case they lost
it all in a bad deal.

But everything over 50 million should be taxed
away, by the United Nations, for a world-common-good.

There are 7.1 million millionaires in the world,
(cash, stock .. not homes)

the total such value held by millionaires is
26 trillion.

Now lets tax this by 10 % and divide it
up for every person seriously poor person on earth,
lets say 2.6 billion poor people.

2.6 tril / 2.6 bill = one thousand dollars.

Remember, we are just taking 10 per cent
of the money of cash-millionaires.

Something that would hurt no one really.

But imagine schools and books and healthcare
and housing and renewable energy for all those
kids ... wow.

Are we criminals that we do not allow such
a simple re-distribution to take place?

A T I N Y world-wide progressive UN-tax...

it reminds me of the german soldier
Willy Peter Reese

Thats us. We are him. We watch countless horrors
and even take part in some of them, and we unfit
to say no and do the right thing. We are bound
by the sure knowledge that if we were to demand
justice, we would be expelled from the system.

Any person in power voicing financial reform
will be ousted.

Oskar Lafontaine was labelled the

'most dangerous man in europe'

on the front page of the yellow press (SUN, London)
and the life of his family was threatened.. so he
quit as finance-minister of the new social-democratic
government in Germany of 1998.

He wanted to reform the world finance A LITTLE BIT.

Or think of what happened to Alfred Herrhausen,
the C H A I R M A N of the Deutsche Bank, the
biggest bank in the world.

When he suggested finance reform, he was assasinated.

The solution to money-conundrum?

Here are some suggestions.

(Never ciriticise without offering
an alternative, however naive)

Visit Marinaleda near Sevilla, Spain

Check out negative interest rates!
Why should money not rot, like tomatoes?

and of course

But most importantly... pick up the phone and
hassle your representative in Parliament about
what (s)he does for justice and equal distribution
of the riches of this earth.

THOU MUST NOT COMMENT (rich people are OK) ( english)

Millionaires and Billionaires are really cool. They DID IT
they lived the dream, they are not neccesarrily rich of
ill gotten gains. Interest payments HAVE TO BE.
Interest is not anti-social, but most poor people are!!
Everyone has the chance to become rich and powerful.
Without elites this society would be doomed.
