Mt. Wachusett Tree-sitters Escape into the Night - WMA Proceeds to Rape Forest (english)
16 Sep 2003
Modified: 17 Sep 2003
Facing supply cut off and a huricane the two Mass Earth First! tree-sitters wanted to avoid health risks and risk of their freedom. No doubt WMA will do a little victory dance, but now people in the Commonwealth are aware of their greed and selfishness and may well decide to ski elsewhere. BOYCOTT THE MT. WACHUSETT SKI AREA!
Mt. Wachusett update 9/16/03

Treesitters decend in midnight rainstrom and escape arrest sept 16th.

Dandi and Badger, suffering from dehydration and exhaustion slipped away into the guarded darkness and off to safety early this a.m. Yesterday a WMA employee scaled Badger's tree and cut the last of his food and water and some of his safety equipment. The two stated they left their perches with heavy hearts, but with thier freedom to fight another day. They felt the sit was no longer effective after being denied supplies or communication with supporters. The September 15th deadline put in place by the state was unjustly extended until the 30th. Facing supply cut off and a huricane, the two wanted to avoid health risks and risk to their freedom, as well as not wanting to face costly lawsuits with WMA; they were succesful in that effort.

Badger and Dandi stated WMA used thier money, power and influence to contol the playing field and to bend laws and rules but weather and isolation would not bend for the sitters. They want to thank those who lent support and do look forward to working toward an ecologically sane world in the face of corporate greed with new freinds made. No compromise in defence of Mother Earth, Earth First!!

Gratitude to the treesitters (english)
17 Sep 2003
I guess I'm slow. I learned about the Mt. Wachusett planned destruction of municiple watershed back some years ago. Was it ten? fifteen? years? I sympathised with the townspeople but didn't feel connected to the issue or know who to talk with to see if I could help.

Later, after an environmental study found that there was an old growth forest -- extremely rare because it is dwarfed (read that as a kind of natural bonsai process) by conditions on Mt. Wachusett, I was happy because I figured the towns would be in free.

Then I learned that the ski lodge somehow got the DEM to proclaim that the rest of the watershed wasn't really watershed and could be clear-cut for the ski lodge to create a snow board slope. That didn't sit right so when I heard about a demonstration down there, my husband and I went to it with signs. Then there was the Presidents' Day demo which I hitched a ride to with a neighbor. I love the spirit of the new radicals. They are warm and creative people who care.

Then there was a quiet time in which the Sierra Club was working legal magic. I was so hopeful the mountain would be safe.

But the commercial collusion between the politicos and the Crowleys won the day when they got a sneak-action through the courts to allow cutting. Which is when the kids took to the trees.

When I say kids, I must admit that as a 62-yr old grandmother of people in these folks age range I can't help seeing them as kids. But they did the work of true citizens of our nation. The work all of us SHOULD be doing. These young people put their lives on the line, literally, to fight what I can only call a corrupt situation brought about by uncaring DEM officials, currying favor with big money and a lot of political turning of the back on the part of state government.

When are the people who claim to be solid citizens going to stop living in the "ME" generation and start caring about our communities? We old people need to form our own demonstrations and work solidly to oppose events such as this.

I apologise for being slow. I still don't know how to do what has to be done but next time I will try harder.
