Many of you have no doubt heard of Ken Kifer and seen his rather extensive cycling website at www.kenkifer.com. We were just informed that Ken was killed by a drunk driver about 6 miles from his cabin near Scottsboro, Alabama. Ken was a dedicated carfree cyclist and advocate, and had written extensively about carfree life and his many long cross country bike trips

Beloved Bicycling Advocate Ken Kifer Killed by Drunk Driver

Ken Kifer was a bicyclist, bicycling advocate, Nature lover, Thoreauvian
and author. On September 13, 2003, 6 miles from his home near Scottsboro,
Alabama, he was hit by a motorist under the influence of alcohol and drugs
who had just been released from jail four hours earlier on a DUI charge.
He died the next morning; he was 57. The driver has been charged with
murder.

Ken rode over 100,000 miles in his lifetime. He believed in the inherent
goodness of bicycles, that bicycles were good for people's physical and
mental well-being and for the well-being of the planet. He used a bike
for all his transportation needs and went on a long tour most years,
stopping to talk to other cyclists he encountered along the way whenever
possible. He said he never met a stranger.

Ken was best known for his website, Ken Kifer's Bike Pages
(http://www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/), which receives
over 12,000 visitors
a month. Its unique mix of valuable information, advocacy, travelogues,
Ken's own brand of humor and more makes it popular with cyclists from
around the world. The rest of his website contains an extensive section
on Thoreau, writings on other topics, and the first eleven chapters of his
utopian novel, The New World, which sadly will now remain forever
unfinished.

Ken's biggest worry was what would happen to his website after he died.
His family understands how important it was to him, and they were very
eager to make sure the site didn't die. Joe Gardner of bikeforums.net
volunteered to host the site on his server. Riin Gill, Ken's closest
friend, will be maintaining the site. She was proofreading the travelogue
from his last trip (a 6500 mile trip to Washington state, through Canada,
and back to Alabama) at the time of his death, and she will add that to
the site when it is finished, though it may only be a partial account.

If anyone would like to donate money in Ken's memory, his family feels the
following two organizations are working to make the world the kind of
place Ken wanted it to be; the third organization needs no explanation.

"BluesPlaya" is completely insane. this post has nothing to do with your psychological problems, Blues Playa, it is about the tragic loss of a great human being.

your obvious disrespect for human life is not called for.

go elsewhere with your hatred.
