Social demonstrations observatory: The continent face the FTAA; mobilizations in Chile, Costa Rica, Peru and Argentina.

The National Organization of Indigenous and Rural Women (AMURI) manifested their rejection about the opinion and declarations expressed by the government about the latest signature of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with United States.
AMURI considerate that in the agreement, Chile becomes a servant for Washington interests.

On a communicate, the organization pointed that “we declare that this agreement was redacted, negotiated and signed in a process in which only some sectors o the big companies were consulted and where the agreement’s contents remained in secret, even to the Parliament”.
The group added, “For United States, this agreement hasn’t any economic importance, because Chile has no possibilities of becoming an important competence for the North American products. However, the agreement turns Chile into a United State’s politic allied for every international negotiation going on, specially the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Free Trade American Area (FTAA).
Besides, Amuri said that after that, it’s clear that Chile will be used to “block any Latin America’s unity possibility facing United States, to complicate the MERCOSUR negotiations and to force the different countries to accept the United State’s exigencies. Chile shamefully becomes the servant of the United State’s interest’s, scarifying, by the way, the welfare and the country’s future”.

Costa Rica

Three thousand people of 40 social organizations marched last Monday against the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Center America and United States.
They departed from different places of San Jose and got together in the Legislative Assembly, where they reclaimed the parliament members not to sign the FTA and the agreement about the International Academy for the Law Compliment) creation.

The activities against the neo liberal policies and privatizations were present in Costa Rica’s University, where the 2nd Forum about the FTAA consequences for Costa Rica took place and it will continue today with a signatures collecting campaign against the FTA and with the 5th Popular Encounter and that is going to take place next October 2nd in the Latin America Biblical University.

Today continues the 2nd Andes Forum of Peasant’s Organizations facing the FTAA, organized by the Latin American Country Side Organizations Coordinator (CLOC). It has the participation of almost a hundred delegates from Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia and Peru, and guests from Chile and Uruguay.
Peasant and indigenous delegates repeated their WTO and FTAA rejection, demanded an authentic nation’s integration, which can’t be reduced to simple free trade agreements; they also expressed their solidarity with the Bolivian peasants and indigenous movement, which engaged a historical battle in the defense of gas.

Next November 7th, Mendoza’s social organizations will make the Sanmartinean March as a protest to the external debt payment, the forced IMF adjustments, and United State’s government and their corporation’s attempt to annex the continent through the FTAA.
Meanwhile still continues the preparative for the First Popular Consult about the FTAA, the external debt and the militarization. These mobilizations are going to be done all over the country, from November 20th to 26th, with the aim to have the citizen’s opinion about these matters.
