The FTAA is “a pact to colonize again the Latin American people” (english)
19 Nov 2003
“The Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) is a pact to colonize again our people, as well as another annexing project”, affirmed the Cuban ambassador in Chile, Alfonso Fraga Pérez.
“The Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) is a pact to colonize again our people, as well as another annexing project”, affirmed the Cuban ambassador in Chile, Alfonso Fraga Pérez.
“This neo colonialism tries to divide up the sub continent, to the free action of the North American capital, committing its historical destiny”, said Fraga during the forum titled “The FTAA and its effects on the American people”, that took place in the Conception University, 515 km at Santiago’s South.

In front of 300 people, the diplomat pointed that the FTAA is “an agreement to deliver Latin America to the capital in a plate tray, that will find in our countries cheap work, resources and a regional base to the transnational competition with other centers of economical power”.

During his exposition, Fraga referred to a speech from the Cuban deputy Osvaldo Martínez, director of the World Economy’s Investigation Center, and his 8 reasons to oppose to the North American project.

In that sense, he pointed that with the FTAA “the sovereignty is mutilated and the decisions about economical policies are definitely taken away from the people, being in the market’s hands, which is ruled by the transnationals in the internal issues, and by the United States policies in the external ones.”

He also spoke about other issues related to the company-State link, and how the international companies “becomes something that is at the same level, or even above the national State, modifying the traditional bases of the international right, based on the relationships among sovereign states”

Fraga emphasized how the FTAA “destroys the integration attempts of Latin America, setting up a subordinate integration that leads the region to the United States absorption”.

In the same forum, organized by the Jose Marti de Concepción Cultural Association, the Venezuelan ambassador in Chile, Victor Delgado also participated, supporting his Cuban colleague’s theory, and denouncing that “the North American project seems to ignore the free trade dangerous consequences on the poor nations and people from the world”.

He announced that Venezuela is actively negotiating a balanced, fair and equal hemispheric agreement that brings welfare to the population. “So, there are proposals en every negotiating group, known as Bolivarian Alternative to the Americas (ALBA)”.

After both ambassador’s expositions, there was a rich debate with the public, where it was clear taht the FTAA, planned to start working in 2005 under the conditions impose by United States, “will affect all the Latin American countries in the same way”.
